Quote: You sir need glasses. I can see the S just fine. Really, I'm wearing glasses and the picture is still so dark that the S is all but obscured. glasses are no replacement for good pictures. while the lightened photo looks good, what is the real color of the coin?

Just guessing: the converted picture is probably close (maybe a little darker). Compare the tone of original staples and a white 2x2.

Quote: pictures are usually like this. Maybe trying to hide something Unfortunately for sellers (good for savvy buyers), I think this is a common "misconclusion" on ebay. I truly believe that the vast majority of lousy pictures on ebay are just simply that... lousy pictures. Nothing more, nothing less.

You score deals on ebay by bidding on things other people miss (including the seller at times). There is an element of risk involved though, of course, and a bit of a learning curve on evaluating the sellers' "tricks." And metalman, you either need new glasses or a new monitor. That S is really obvious even on my cruddy laptop.

My computer is new so I guess new glasses? seriously the picture came out better here than it showed in the auction, I already said that in my second post. The point is why would I want to spend more than 50 dollars to find out what was under the shadow? If that's your thing have at it, I will buy coins that I know what I'm getting, I personally don't have time to deal with returns, pay pal complaints or ebay buyer protection. the best protection is not buying coins you can't see.

I changed the contrast on my monitor, I can see the S now but the rest of the coin is still dark enough to hide any number of problems, the degritis is more obvious also.

I agree, why spend the $$ to find out what it really is, not worth it too risky. If your really interested in it you can always ask the seller to post a different picture.
