I want to thank everyone for helping me out on this because I was thinking about bidding.
I've probably looked at 20-30 '70s for a small date. I always looked at the upper curl of the nine and
every one was flat at the end, not pointed, so that was it for me as far as diagnostics was concerned.

Now I know about the liberty and the length of the 7 and have a lot more handle on the subject.
As always thank God for CCF and it's members!

the bottom of the 7 is not short enough for a small date.

That is my #1 diagnostic, when I look at these, that stands-out like a sore thumb. I takes me about 3 seconds to decide after seeing that and the overall look of the date. On a large date the bottom of that 7 is really, really long.

BUT what if there really is a middle dated one? Not small, not large.

That used to be my first diagnostic as well, until I read here on the forum (it was either you or Chuck, I will search for it later) discussing the shape of the zero. Now, that is the always the first thing I see; looking at the zero is automatic.

I have to be honest, I actually struggled with this one.

At first I thought it *might* be, but something just wasn't right. After reading Chuck's comments, I don't feel so bad now.

Scooby,I agree...as you can see by my first post. Seeing good signs and bad signs has a way of tricking the mind of us amateurs. But I will say I would never have bought it based on what I could see.

It does not have to be! Stickies are easily overlooked. Go to the top of the thread to the first post, click on the yellow star Is-This-A-1970-S--Small-Date?. It is now bookmarked.

Then, go to the top of any page, click on the My CCF link, then the Bookmarks link.

You are welcome. It is a great, often overlooked feature.

True Stickies are overlooked frequently, however, just how many know of this feature. Maybe we need a sticky on how to do the star thing.
BUT, then if those stickies are missed, no one would know of the star thing explained in the sticky.
Bet in about a Month or two this all will oome up again anyway.

Sorry, I was gone for a while, but I reread everything. Great discussion and evaluation! Thanks for the insight.

Now I have to go back and look at all my 1970's to see if I have them labeled correctly.
