This just proves what a genius idea the registry was. For a guess, how about at least 5 figures. I've got a feeling this will sell for insane money, then just crash in value because it's being so over-hyped.

Hard to say. If 2 rich people get in a bidding war then it's off to the races. Most people with lots of money aren't always the sharpest tools in the shed. I can't even fathom a guess as it could be all over the place for something like this when the hype itself is worth more than the coin being sold. It's just a penny for god sakes and it's not even all copper!

Everyone always thinks that high prices for late date coins are caused by the registry but the simple fabct is that high priced moderns existed before the registry did and many of these high priced coins never even appear in a registry set. Indeed, when the registries were started they didn't even allow any modern coins in them. Theregistries have done more to hurt collecting these coins than to help. ...Or at least they've been set back years. People collect modern coins and some are rare in high grade. This causes high prices. The 2003 isn't rare in high grade yet it remains the only MS-70 US coin ever struck for circulation. Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

Well, does anybody know what this little zinc jewel sold for?
Found it. I went and looked it up. It went for $13,500. Not bad but far below most of our estimates.

This is why I am only buying world coins at the moment because there are too many speculators with too much money to make collecting US coins any fun anymore. The US coin market is akin to a shark feeding frenzy at the moment and I need both of my arms for work.  I will wait until the pool clears a bit, until then I have my cheapy fun world coins to mess with. |

I was going to guess $20,000, before I saw what the sale price was.
I agree with most posters that it was over hyped. Anyway, nothing I would be that interested in, even if I had the money.

DANG. I missed the hype. I love hype for modern coins and I just haven't seen any. EVER. I see plenty of hype for old coins and everyone waxes poetic talking about 18th century gold but let anyone say a modern isn't a piece of junk and it's like a scene from Invasion of the Body Snatchers with people pointing and screaming hype. If you call a full page ad advertising PCGS which mentions this sale, hype, then I guess it was hyped. Just a few years ago it was possible to say that very few people collect any coins dated after 1964 but now there are growing numbers of people collecting these coins from circulation or in unc. But very few people pay more than a very small premium for collections of coins minted after 1964. If this ever changes then you can expect to see some real changes in pricing struture from F to MS-70. Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.
