That's really interesting. I'm going to ask the gal at the post office to let me look through the box there.

At least the Mint stuffed a Legal Tender coin in there.

The RAM has committed errors like that too, and such error sets have demonstrated aftermarket traction.

Hi sel,

What sort of premium does something like this command in Australia?

I just called CCCS and described the error. He said that there are probably 20 collectors of error sets in Canada, and they typically collect an example of each error, rather than one of each error of each year. Because of this there isn't much of a premium for these sets in Canada. If that's the case I might want to hang on to this instead of selling it.

I have never heard of an error set before (aside from the 10c mule last year), but apparently sometimes a coin will be flipped, a pocket will be empty, or there will be two coins in the same pocket. Sometimes there will be a more common error (like a wrong planchet) in the set. Other times, like mine, one coin is missing and another is duplicated.

I'm not too sure what I should do with this. Right now it's in my safety deposit box.

splatto,

Is that a scanned picture? And did you just adjust the brightness/contrast afterward? Sorry to go off topic, just having problems with my scans and wanted to know. Thanks!

splatto: The only reasonable strategy I can suggest is to keep it and watch after market behaviour.

Sets such as these are like error coins. Depends on the amount of error, the rarity of the error and collector interest. The third mentioned is based on collector sentiment, and that is almost impossible to predict on it's own.

The CCCS spokesman may speculate that there are only 20 error set collectors. I seriously doubt that. Almost anybody who is interested in modern Canadian coins, or in coins generally, is a potential collector. Such a person may specialise in nickels, for instance, and may acquire an error set as an interesting sideline, perhaps to re-sell or keep.

This is a packaging, not minting error. No different than the other day, I picked up a perfectly sealed, nearly empty, can of Manwich.

Since anyone can duplicate it with relatively simple equipment, it shouldn't carry a premium.

Shouldn't and doesn't are different matters, tho. I'd write a big story about how this is a super rare item, none other reported, will ship with original packaging, only a few in history, etc, and start it on ebay for $100 or so, and see if you can find a fish.

I get what you're saying, although I didn't claim it was a minting error, I simply said it was clearly a mint error. I asked the CCCS guy if he'd certify the set and he said that for collectors of these, it's very easy to determine legitimate packaging. That said, I would imagine that it wouldn't be too hard to duplicate, so I sure hope he's right. I'd still like to get it certified, somehow.
