Hi Sandpaper

This coin looks like a late die state MS coin to me,, I do not see the effects at least from the pics that I would recognise as wear,, although there are a couple of dings and what looks like a little finger grease on the coin,, my opinion is MS-61 due to the die state and corresponding lack of sharp detail, flat lettering ,and forehead curls detail.

the date looks like it is the result of die abrasion ,, it is not the 2 over 1 for the philly mint.

Hey ,Irish thanks for looking. The 2 doesn't appear to be an overdate. It is better looking than shows(the 2) It is worn, where it appears to be,like you said.I didnt notice.Overall, the coin looks nice.Real nice.Maybe cleaned. But it looks like all luster.I paid $7 cause it looked UNC. I'll try another pic, outside, cause I haven't set up a proper photo rig yet.Didn't use a tripod, either.

I might have to upgrade my decision when you post your new pics however I am firmly sticking to my EF-40 grade for now. I thought it might be an overdate because I thought I saw the upper tip of a 1 sticking out above the arc of the 2. Couldn't really tell clearly from that particular picture. Will be looking forward to your new pics. Me and Rick both like to look at and grade Mercs.

Son of a gun. You got eagle eyes. There is a little bump, there. It looks like a strike, too. I can't see any other part of a 1, however.

Hi Irish

The 42 over 1 overdate for the Philly mint has the 1 set in its original location,, which puts it to the far left of the 2 .

Just a note concerning grade !!! an EF-40 example would not show rounded tops to the Diagonal bands nor a slight seperation of the center bands,, The high curl behind the ear would show considerable flatness as well would the wing tips ,,

This coin has rounded diagonals and a slight seperation of the center bands with no flattening of the far ends of the fasces sticks,, the wings show a feather seperation all the way to the ends, and the high curl behind the ear is full and rounded.

all indicative of a MS coin,, although the lettering has flat and spread out appearance of a late die state as does the forehead curls
and date.

Having said all that ,, I will keep my Low MS grade.

I am learning, thanks for your observations.I can follow what you say, as long as you say it.Those diagonals are very rounded. It's strange how some letters are flattened and the rest are very sharp.I'm looking under high power.I agree with you.$7 too much?

No,Rick I didnt need it.I got exactly like 5 or 6 in 2x2's that I bought last year for a buck a piece. This one looked better. My Mom has a whole book of them. She doesn't collect, but has a few whitman books she made years ago.I looked last year, she has most of them, but funny thing,no '16D.I never looked closer.

A high AU-ish due to the possible obverse wear.

They may look terrible but can see the detail alot better. I can see what Rick was talking about now. The other pictures were real shiny and cutting out some of the detail to the feathers on the cap. The middle bands look almost separated now. Brightness kind of tweaks with my eyes and I can't see clearly but your second pics work better for me. I will assent and move my grade up to MS-61.

Now that the picture is more defined I think it is a worn die. I think if you flip it over it should be the same spot where the letters on the back are a little flat also. Could be worn die or the pressure wasn't set correctly on the press.
