Are you talking about modern or wheat "S" cents ?

Depending where you live S mint is hard to find , like me I live in jersey shore and I only found 1 S mint in a entire box today plus the San Francisco mint nowadays only " issues are proof or silver .S mm is very low in numbers comparing D or P so that's why ! I save all S and D , but talking about early dates wheties early then 45 are kind of rare and extremely rare !

I am totally new to coin collecting, so dont trust me, but I noticed that 1969 to 1974 S mint seem to be a lower production run than other modern cents, so I put those aside.

ok. I just never new. I guess it was pretty obvious though. I have about $400 face in pre 82 pennies. Is it worth it to go through them all?

I have about $160 face in copper pennies. I did not realize that there were certain dates to look out for untill I had about $100 face. Since I do not plan on selling these any time soon, I do not plan on going through them again. It would be funny if I had a 1970 S small date in there and did not know about it though. :) Thats a $25 penny I think.  Edited by willy13

not as easy to find in some areas I save them all and have been trying to put together a roll of each LMC date and mint mark I have been doing this project for 2 years and the s mints from the late 60's and early 70's are still being looked for the only one I have a full roll of is 1974 I find those and the 1969 the most out of all the S mints the 1968 is found the least by me |

I was 'conditioned' by my dad early in my childhood collecting years to save 'S' mint coins of all types. Even today I think twice when spending '79S or '80S SBA's... I guess it's just in my 'coin blood'... |

I found a 40's Wheat penny up here in the KANADA! ( lol ) and it was minted with the S. is this good? |

I have 45 pounds of copper cents. Been buying rolls at the bank and getting on average 24% copper from each roll or 12 coppers per roll. Save all wheats of course and also Pre 1996 Canadian cents (copper). Putting together a 1941-2010 Toned Cent Set, so any cents toned with nice eye appeal I keep. With all the rolls I've sorted, still have a long, long way to go before that set will be complete. But what I have so far, is gorgeous. Probably not going to get rich doing this, but it's fun. I enjoy it and that's what it's all about. Sometimes I run, run, run and get caught up in the investing side of coins too much. Kinda nice to kick back with some rolls of cents once in a while and get back to the basics of this hobby, fun and enjoyment.

Not many around here so I try and keep as many as I can. Trying to fill a few rolls.

No...it isn't. Memorial cents were minted for circulation in San Francisco from 1968 through 1974 and all of them are very common. Thousands of bank wrapped rolls, BU tubes, and sealed bags still exist. The chance that a dingy brown EF-AU coin will ever have premium value is about nil.

Mostly popularity. The more people say or talk about the same thing you are mentioning, the more popular those coins become. True they just don't make them anymore for circulation in SanFran but people just keep saying those are the one to save, so that is what starts this popularity going. With coins there are many that are expensive mostly due to popularity and others that should be due to low mintages but not popular, so not expensive. |

The question was in reference to pulling S mint memorial cents out to keep - as S mint memorials. And my response stays the same. It's not worth the time and trouble to pull out a bunch of S mint cents just because.
Of course I go through ALL cents looking for doubled dies...so yes, it is worth going through them for doubled dies...but that wasn't the question.
