Chris. Can you post pics of a few of the coins you received? BU rolls of pre-1921 Morgans have gotten very expensive for sure. The pics in the auction look okay. Is that what your coins look like?

Hello Everyone,
Thank you all for your thoughtful responses to my posting. I would like to get some photos taken of these Morgans, and will post them when I do, but it's been a hectic weekend... I'm sure you all understand.
Thanks again, I'll be back...
Chris

Hello Everyone, Whew. I'm feeling at least a little better about my purchase -- I've browsed through the archive of photographs at this link, which I found at the bottom of SuperDave's (did I get that right?) signature: http://www.mycoins.us/WINS/Morgans/morgan_set.htmAfter looking at the photos found at the above link, I'm realizing that the rim of a Morgan is not supposed to be razor sharp -- unless I'm mistaken, a Morgan dollar has sort of a "rounded" rim, between the beading on the face of the coin and the ribs around the rim. (I realize, as well, that making this statement shows how incredibly uneducated I am about Morgan dollars... showing my ignorance here I guess.) At any rate, thanks again for all of the useful information. Still haven't decided what I'm going to do with these coins, but I will try to get some photos posted and would appreciate anyone's input who cares to take the time to look at the photos, if/when I finally get them taken and posted. Thanks, Chris

Hello Everyone,
Well I finally got some halfway decent photos taken of the 1886 Morgans. But the file sizes are too large to post. I'll try to shave them down to an acceptable size for posting, but in the meantime, if any experienced users have any advice to get my photos posted with this thread I'd really appreciate the help. I'm hoping to give you pro's a chance to look at these coins before the 7-day grace period to return them has expired.
Thanks,
Chris

I crop and compress images in Microsoft Picture Manager and then upload to photobucket.com.

You can do as above, or also put them on flickr, picasa, or your own server.

Hello All, OK. I finally got some photos taken of a few of the 1886 Morgans I originally posted about at the beginning of this thread. Although I'm afraid the compressed images may not show the level of detail you experts need to see in order to ascertain whether or not these coins have been cleaned. I am only posting the obverse/reverse of a single coin, and a group of 6 from the roll -- not all 20. The single in the closeup shots is in the lower right of the group of 6. As I mentioned before, my primary concern is that I grossly overpaid for a roll of cleaned (I guess the phrase is "slider"?) coins. I am certainly NOT any kind of exerienced collector, but if the dollars have been cleaned, I don't think it was by manual/friction means -- the smooth flat fields surrounding Lady Liberty (obverse) and Eagle (reverse) do not appear to have been "scraped" or "scrubbed" (to my untrained eye, there are not any tiny swirling or parallel grooves or lines). However, these coins are just so darn bright and shiny! There is simply no evidence of toning that I can see at all. To my untrained eye, they look like they were minted yesterday -- or perhaps soaked in Tarn-X the week before they were shipped to me? I guess that is what I am afraid of -- that they have been chemically cleaned, and are not worth any more than the spot price for silver. I would truly appreciate any opinions that the collective wisdom of this community can offer. And feel free to ask any questions, I'll answer as best I can. Thanks for taking a look, Chris

The 1st coin you posted may be polished. It looks like the brightness and balance of your images is a bit off though so it's hard to tell.
"Luster" and "shiny" are two different things. Better images will help. Please use indirect lighting and no flash.

Hard to tell from photos but those look like typical MS 60 - 62 roll coins with possibly an AU slider or two in the mix

Your first image, and the bottom-right coin of the group of six obverses you posted, have the hallmark of polishing. What I'm looking for here is unnatural brightness on the jaw and cheek - areas which should never be "shiny" on even a circulated coin.
With that said, I'm afraid the images you've posted aren't sufficient to make a determination, or even a theory. It's very, very difficult to determine cleaning sometimes, even in excellent photographs, because there are so many ways to light a coin and so many different cameras with different characteristics to image them.

SuperDave - I suspect that is just his camera most of the pictured coins seem to have good cartwheel which is not something I'd expect to see on a heavily polished AU coin.

My gut feeling (because the images aren't conclusive) is that this roll has some true MS pieces in it and some cleaned/polished as well.

Thanks to everyone who took a look at the photos and posted their opinions. I realize it's hard to give a definitive opinion as to whether or not the coins have been cleaned without better photos.
For future postings, when I'd like to share images with the group, I'm going to take the time to learn how to save images with a third party image hosting site, and then post the link to that site.
I really appreciate the time everyone has taken to offer their opinions and guidance. In the meantime, because there seems to be enough doubt as to whether or not some of these coins have been cleaned, I think I will return the roll to the seller, and next time I'll be a little more cautious when I make a purchase of this magnitude.
Thanks again, and I look forward to participating on this forum in the future.
Chris
