You're more than welcome upstate! The other fellow was happy with the 90% so it's a win-win.

Looks XF45 to me too.

the S makes me a little cautious of the coin

I bought my kids (when they were a lot younger) a low power microscope to look at organisms swimming in pond water and insects and whatnot. You use both eyes and the light is from above or below.
I don't know 50 or 100 power?

Anyway it is the bomb for looking at coins. The mintmark and surrounding area looks fine under power. I see what your looking at, but it's mostly the lighting in the pic. There is no doubt in my mind that this coin is legit.

I've been looking at a lot of these the last year or so and the "s" always looks bold and high for this year IMO.

So one more to go for this set and I actually think I'm going for it. 1909s vbd or bust- should take about a year if I can curtail my spending on all the other coins I want. (fat chance)

Great!

Like I said before, I didn't want to rain on your parade; just pointing out what I saw. Glad you're confident in it's authenticity.

Nice coin. I remember a few years back when the 31S was considered a real nothing coin. Although only 866,000 minted I was told many were put aside back then so the market is full of nice ones and the values are not to high. Then all of a sudden everyone realize there are only so many of thoes and lots, lots more coin collectors than in the 1930's. Prices on those are really going up, up, up.
Again, nice deal.

Second lowest mintage in the series but a lot of uncirculated coins due to early hoarding.

31s cents were recognized as valuable and were saved in bu second only to the 50d nickel. For decades, it made little sense to buy one less than xf, because there was so little price difference between g and xf. Even today, the price only doubles from g to au58. Compare that to 24d (11+ times), 22d (6 times), 21s (52 times), or 15s (17 times).
