Exactly...I want to crack out the silver and sell it for melt. However, I don't want to crack any sets that are worth more together. I was checking out auctions on ebay and it looks like the only sets bringing a premium over melt is the 1999 (no secret) and the 2001 b/c of the Sacagawea. Am I miss anything from the other years? |

Like Jay said I would keep them all together. They will be worth more in the long run.

You're not missing anything. The 1999 set because the quarters did not have a separate set released, lowering the mintage. The other for the dollar, as you said.

Btw, When you plan on selling coins for melt. I would be interested in the Kennedys.

I can only wonder what the next few generations are going to collect, pictures of the coins of days gone bye, you should see the people selling ANYTHING silver to the silver melter at the coin shows, I say crack them also, I will have a set worth more too.......Is it any wonder where all the coinage of yesteryear's have gone! I have ALL the proof / mint sets from 1953 to date, ALL silver proof sets for the years they were not, I collect them,It took a very long time to cherrypick every set, I would not melt a coin.......

I have a complete set of silver proofs since 1992 and I will keep them together and sell other items before I reduce them to silver melt. Also I don't collect clad so they are my only examples of the quarter series.

11 years is hardly consider maturing age for coins, now if you told me they were 111 years old and only worth more because of silver than we would agree, but in my opinion silver is going up still.

Let's not forget cracking open these modern sets will not do much to the value of sets that are kept together. In the older sets, pack in cellophane, you cannot "undo" cracking sets open, leaving less of them intact. Modern silver proof sets are sealed in no way. You can have the empty lenses and boxes, and put randomly bought coins back in, with no one being able to tell the difference. This is a major fault in the modern sets IMO, these things should be sealed.

I am doubtful that the cracking of the silver proof sets will really drive up their price. If it does, it won't be anytime soon. Don't forget, the price is regulated by supply and demand. Today, the demand is really high for these sets yet people aren't paying more than the melt value. And it they are worth a lot more 100 years from now...who cares as I will be long gone from this earth! :)

Which are worth keeping?
I say they're all worth keeping.
But if you don't think so crack them and sell them off
individually for highest return.
