Ugly - Can you post a picture of a large H so we can see what one looks like? The 3rd coin I posted seems to have the least "slanted roof" effect but still slanted some.

This is the best picture I can find of a large H at the moment. Maybe Ugly or someone has something better.  |

Even at that size, I can see the difference to my coin.
The interiors portions of the H are noticeably larger.

I don't have a better shot, my camera is being really flaky on macro at the moment and it's prevented me from posting some pictures of ten cent toners for the grading subforum. I am undertaking to acquire a new SLR.
I do have a large H in mint state and it has the two large square open areas. The small H has the upper monopoly house I spoke of.
I mean, this is how I've always diagnosed them and this is what I saw in the first pic of this thread. If anyone has a better diagnostic method for these, please do post it! I'm not worried about being wrong in the least, it's just what my grandfather taught me and I've never looked into it beyond that. I've never tried any form of spacing attribution at all on these, they are too consarned small for me.

Not that I don't believe Ugly but wanted to see if there is any other way besides shape to tell one from the other. I saw too many pictures today while looking around that were attributed Large H but had different shapes to the inside of the H's in some cases. That and the hockey game was beginning to irritate me a bit  So I decided to measure the H's with my little usb microscope and found that 3 of the 4 I uploaded pictures of are essentially the same height and width but one of them (2nd certified one just back from ICCS) is the same height but 10% wider (measuring device came in at .46 for 3 and .50 for number 4). Not really conclusive but thought I would throw it out there anyway. I measured each H on each coin 3 times and took the average. The next plan is to get my hands on one attributed to be a large H and see what I find. Edited by marjonbc

It seems to me that the H of the 1902 large H and the 1903 small H are the same size. And that's what leads to a lot of confusion.
The sequence should be called something like
1902 tiny H
1902 small H
1903 small H
1903 large H

I just tried out that theory on the raw 1902 H 5 cents I have at home... have to grab the TPG ones and look at them as well but quick numbers look like this (since I don't know if the actual measurements are accurate on this USB scope treat them as a ratio) I may only have the 1902 tiny H rather then the small. Oh.. and the Canucks - Boston game 1902 Small .5 tall Tiny H? .35 wide 1902 Large .65 tall .54 wide 1903 Small .61 tall .46 wide 1903 Other .61 tall This is the one TPG small H but is larger than the other one TPG graded small H .50 wide Nothing really conclusive other than there were probably a number of H punches each year maybe? The small 1902 above is also shaped a lot different than any of the rest of the 02 or 03 H's I have  Also wondering if anyone has a theory on what someone did to cause the damage pictured below? Seems to me the small "1902" H has little or no serif's - the large "1902" H has full serifs and is larger in size. cameron93 in his pictures shows this difference quite well.
