Platinum is nice. It depends on what you want and what is the best value. Platinum is off it's recent highs and nowhere near it's all-time high. If the price was right then it should be a good purchase for you.

only problem I have with metals like platinum and palladium is when you try to sell it, you get offered way below melt. Also people are more familiar with something like silver and gold but not platinum or palladium.
However, I do like that engelhard plat bar, looks neat.

mkman brought up a good point. Although the melt value of platinum is far more than silver, people want to buy things they are familiar with when purchasing for investments, such as silver. SO if you ever wanted to sell it on CL or something along those lines, you may have a tougher time doing so. Although I have no experience with this, it comes to mind.

Great point(s). Which is why I wanted this particular metal to come with a certificate. When it does come time to sell, having an assayed certificate, with a reputable company will make it easier to sell. I don't plan on buying a lot of platinum (probably 1 oz total) - Then again, I'll either sell to my local dealer (who know me) or the coin community forum in 25 years. Thanks for the responses so far, I appreciate the input & advice.

Anyone who thinks that silver won't go right back up is really missing out.
The time to buy is on the dips!

Mitch - I totally agree. I will invest a larger amount @ the coin show (200 dealers) on 5/20 regardless of the price. Ironically, this is also the same day I am set to receive a rather large quarterly check from work for my hard work. I'll take that as a sign to invest.
Trust me, I really wanted those 10+ .9999 Canadian Maple Leafs in the display case yesterday.

Quote: only problem I have with metals like platinum and palladium is when you try to sell it, you get offered way below melt. NOT true for 1 oz or more. Online dealers will offer anywhere from spot to $25 per oz lower than spot on 1 oz or more on any given day of the week. tripncoins - fwiw, it's best to get these in 1 oz if you can go for it (premiums are less). ALSO make sure you have the assay card / cert number / sealed unit from a reputable dealer. Else walk away. The one you posted above is fine / good.

Thank you - I tried to get these in 1 oz but gosh, it's hard to put down 1800+ when in my mind I'm thinking I could get 1 oz of gold and some silver. (Besides, who doesn't like a PM variety pack?)
Makes you think twice sometimes.
On a side note, I purchased this item from a reputable dealer who is local and gave me a receipt as well for record keeping.
Mkman - email sent.

platinum is just a cool metal.... And there is a lot of industrial uses for it too.
I almost bought a 1/10th oz platinum eagle, but I went with a gold eagle instead. But I agree, I wanna get some platinum in my collection. Most likely some smaller pieces to make sure they are easy to sell, but mainly just for the cool factor.

One day I asked my wife to drop off a bar on her lunch hour. She looked at it and said "are you really that hard up? Let me just give you the $30 for the five ounces of silver and you can pay me back later." "Now look at it!" I said. "Omigod! OK, no problem" It's amazing how close a 10 oz bar of platinum looks like 5 oz of silver.

Quote: It's amazing how close a 10 oz bar of platinum looks like 5 oz of silver. Yikes! It sure does, Fred, and would either be a VERY costly mistake OR a terrific purchase! When he was a young man, my grand father bought a cigar with a $5 US gold coin. He thought that it was a nickel. I suspect that this was after having had a few beers at the local Speak Easy. I asked him if that was a really good smoke and he just glared at me, so I guess that it wasn't THAT good!

Quote: Question to the forum: Are Engelhard Platinum bars hard to come by? Only in the sense that I don't think they make them anymore. PAMP would be easier, OZ koala or playpus prettier, and US eagles available in various weights.

$90 per gram makes a $1772 oz of Pt 2799.27. I think I'd be looking for larger chunks.
Buy rhodium for $2250 oz, and see if it will go back to $10,000
