Thanks for the grades so far. No one has matched what ANACS has it graded. I will say that the coin has a good bit of luster in hand. I'm not sure if the photos convey that.

I was going with EF45 also until you said no one matched the grade. The softness in the Eagle made me hesitate to go AU on this piece, but the reverse definitely looks mid to upper AU. As for luster, it doesn't show well in the picture- just looks like light dancing off the coin from the light source, rather than luster.

Well, considering the luster...how about AU53?
It does have exceptionally nice eye appeal.

I'd go with an AU! Nice looking flying eagle

I might go AU58 or MS60, my eyesight is bad so need a larger picture. Are the talons on the eagles feet visible?

It could be VF35.
The wear on the eagle feathers matches PCGS Photograde VF35.
Sure seems that it would be much better. The coin looks great.

Gosh, that's a big rub on that breast! Still, I have to go around mid-AU on that one, easy.
Nolawyer, just something you might not know, that's also the "Low Leaf" reverse. I mention that to point out that to complete a set of these 1858s, you need the other three.

Thanks for the info, eddiespin. I got this one for my certified type set, but I may try to complete the flying eagle series at some point (minus the 1856.)
I'll post the grade here later this afternoon.

Personally, I think it's a solid AU50. It has luster and generally looks AU, but the rub on the breast should keep it from grading too much higher.

Here is the ANACS grade: I think this is a difficult series to grade. To my eyes, it looks to be AU50, maybe AU53. I think the coin has great eye appeal for the grade and I am happy with it.

Wow--I actually undergraded this one! I was going by my NGC AU53.

Not saying anything bad about your good luck on the grading but that coin is very over graded.
Might be why ANACS does not usually bring the same prices for grade as NGC and PCGS.

It's a beautiful coin and has great fields, but I too feel it's over graded. I would give it an XF45 as I believe the wear on the breast is much too great to give it an AU grade, been through 1 too many hands. It's also comparable to my NGC XF45 FE not to say they are the gold standard.
