Tellers Don't Always Know. Good Score At The Bank.

I was dumping some coins yesterday and I found an 1897 Barber dime, a 1915 Barber quarter, and 2 1964 roosevelts in the eject bin.
I am definately going back there.

The thing with that is, I've found that unless you educate children and have them appreciate the coins at a young age, they'll probably liquidate the coins for money at a bank (unless they know the coins have silver or gold in them or they are rare enough to take to a coin dealer) when they get older and the coins are given to them. One girl I know tells me her grandmother gave her some old quarters (Which I assume are silver), and she acts as if she doesn't care about them (Maybe I should make her an offer to buy them from her).

When I saw my first Wheat cent when I was five years old, I thought it was the coolest thing ever. My dad showed me that he kept a '21 Morgan, '59-D Franklin, several silver Roosevelts, and a couple of '43-P nickels. I appreciated any old coin that came my way, such as finding a '42 Merc during lunchtime in seventh grade and finding a '64 quarter in eighth grade. I appreciated old coins even more since then, and now I've arrived at the point where I decided to collect them.

I have a couple of tellers that save old coins and bills for me, and other odds and ends. So far, some of the things I've found:

*1940 Merc
*1940 Washington
*Two rolls of Franklins
*10 '64 Kennedys
*15 40% Kennedys
*$5 U.S. Note
*$5 and $20 Federal Reserve Notes from Series 1934

As a "thank you" to the tellers for holding things for me, I buy them a box of doughnuts or cookies from a bakery.

I have worked with a couple of local tellers and they now save some things for me and I have helped to educate them as well. They have really appreciated it. It has worked to both our advantages.

I didn't realize how good of shape these were in. Perfect Reed. I wonder if their were more but they kept them.
To clean them up some and stop the mean green.
I started out with a product Verdi Care, It did a decent job on them removed a lot of the green. Always enjoy getting to use it. I wanted to take it a step further, being I just read a few topics on here about vinegar. I put a little White Vinegar in an Ultra Sonic Cleaner. Ran 3 480sec cycles. Just remembered I forgot about them around 2am, Went to sleep and Didn't get back to them until about 10:30am Then with a extra soft brush did a once over to remove any stubborn material. Gave em a good rinse with Tap Water then with distilled. Pat dry. Air dry, Out of the 8 coins 1 was saved due to condition. The scan didn't capture the film and grime. If only I didn't leave them in for so long. The ones from the bath came out a little whitish or powdery. And if you look at the reeding the copper is lighter. I wouldn't say pink. But lighter. Of course this is when I noticed most of them have perfect reeding. Its weird cause some are lighter than others, I wonder if its due to their prior location thinking they all came from the same roll or did the vinegar react differently to each coin.

DMan I've only come across a few of them as well. But thank you. I also keep anything with full talons. I read about talons at http://www.SmallDollars.com . Anyone else looking out for these as well.

I showed an AU Wide Rim to a dealer about 6 months ago. He said $15 to $30. I wasn't planning on selling it just curious. But I believe the lower 60's will put you in the $60 range. I wish I could of kept up the payments to PCGS for their coin facts. I'd like to look these up.

Wow those are ugly. SBA are the ugliest United States coin ever made.Just my opinion of course.
