lay a single ply of tissue (facial or bathroom tissue) over the coin... silver and nickel will appear different colors.

Yes, the copper core should be visible on a CuNi clad proof but the tissue test can be done when a coin is in a holder and you cannot weigh it or examine the edge.

I was just online here to ask the same question. I was thinking of buying some of the silver proof quarters from the mint and yes, I know the mint is fine, but how can you tell when in the plastic sleeves? Just wondering. I wouldn't want a bunch of clad proofs if I decide and someone somehow either mixes them up by accident or on purpose. Anyone know? Also, I was going to see if a local coinshop has any of the older sets and same issue but even moreso. THANKS!

I must have missed the post that says you can check in the holder. So I looked at the link, does there have to be bight light? Just wondering. Sorry.

Really thinking about buying some since the 5 quarter 2010 costs 39.95 and the scrap silver value is a little over 37 right now so a win win to buy some! For junk coins it's about 3% or so over spot so with that added to the 37 almost even. If silver continues to go up just purchased basically at junk price, if it goes down, have proofs worth more than junk! Those 2010 proofs were pulled back when silver was climbing in the spring (so did the 2011 for that matter only later since they cost a few dollars more)

The UNOPENED State Quarter silver proof sets have the red background and the red box if included. The clad proofs are in blue. The mint switched over to the plastic sleeves that show the coin's edge starting with the 2010 sets.

Wait until you get the 1999 Silver Quarter Set. Most sets will run about $45.00, the 1999 was $139.00.......

I just finished a book, I need to post pic's.

Most coin shops will sell the sets for a little over melt. The only problem is the 1999 set and the fact that most coin shops do not have ALL of the sets.

The Bay was where I got alot of my sets. ebay Bucks paid for the 1999 set by itself, so basically it was free.

Silver proofs are also a little whiter than the regular proofs, which are a light gray.

You can't weigh it in a holder, but with the new holders that the mint is putting proofs in, you can see the edge.
