re "Genuine or not,the chinese fake slabs have me concerned if anything ebay is real, seller seems genuine but no guarantee its grade or authenticity.Downies sold it to seller or did they?.Downies watching this item
I would never buy a pre decimal over $500 unless its from a respected dealer, ebay is a lucky dip with 1930 pennies and be realistic,no one would be bidding $17k on a coin unseen from this auction site"

Each person has their own rules and limits of what they are comfortable doing. Clearly based on this auction there are people who dont share the same views as you and its those people we are guessing about :) (although it is possible they are shills)

If the item is not as described, why would you pay for it?
For a very expensive item, it is fair enough to get proper verification that the item is genuine and as described before payment.
A genuine seller of a very expensive item (in this case currently over $12000) should not have a problem with this being done. If they did have a problem with this being arranged, I think it would be fair enough to just walk away.
In an odd sort of way, I think there is less risk in buying a very expensive item, than a less expensive item where you are going to take less precautions (and hence more risk) about getting what you are paying for.
I agree that spending a lot of money on something you have never seen, based on some fairly poor photos, where descriptions are very subjective is crazy. If on the other hand you were to go and look at the item and decide that it is genuine, and set your price like that, you could get a bargain while others are thinking " ebay can be dodgy".
There are some items I am interested in which are much, much less that $12,000 which I am reluctant to buy sight unseen, even from a respected dealer, just because I would like to see it in the flesh to decide if I would be happy purchasing them. I am considering a flight to check them out for myself.
Not everything on ebay has to be sight unseen.

re "no one would be bidding $17k on a coin unseen from this auction site", you may well be right.
Just to see, I took a look at "completed listings" for "coins" ordered from "highest price", and the highest sale was just over $10000 and a few others at $10000 on the first page of results.

If it was genuine and as described in the ad, but was being sold in a dealers, do you think $17,000 would be a reasonable price?

$13855 now with 18 hours to go.
The seller has stated that they are happy for the coin to be looked at by a dealer on completion of the auction.

$13855 is a bargin basment price considering you can have it varified before you hand over the cash.
This one might just be the real Mcoy.
If I had the reddies I think I would have a crack at this one.
Nothing to lose, If it is dodgy you are not compelled to pay up.
Cv in rennics for a F 1930 is $21,500

I kind of agree trout, I would definitely get it verified before handing over that kind of money.

Keep in mind that only the last second of the auction tells you the price.
It could go for the price now, or twice the price now...

Not sure what you are referring to floridaplams.
Do you mean getting it checked out, arranging payment and collection of the coin?

Genuine 1930 Australian penny - graded FINE
Ended - 15 Oct, 2011
Bid history: 50 bids
Winning bid: AU $16,850.00
Item number: 250904883420

I had another look at this: it's in a slab, bearing label "Downie's & Sherwood"; and what might be a reference number "AJ565". The coin description includes these words "with faults" - I wonder what the grader had in mind ?

The seller still has his 100% feedback. I delved into that, but I couldn't see this particular transaction, so I'm no better informed ...

Does anyone have anything to add to this story:
for example - paid or not ? verified ? suing ? counter-suing ?

It's not in a slab. That Downies & Sherwood card is simply a description of the coin which the seller has used to help in the auction. He has explained that the "faults" are scratches on the obverse but the photos don't show those scratches or how serious they are.

Often if there is a messy dispute the listing gets removed from the completed listings.

Presumably if the coin is genuine then the buyer would be happy with paying $16,850 for a coin with a CV of about #20,000

I would love to know how this turned out, but that will probably remain between the buyer and the seller.

I stand corrected: it's not in a slab, just in a 2x2, inside a plastic flip, with a D&S card in the other half.
