Quote:We do care. Instead of running our volunteer butts off doing ebay's job, we need to boycott buying any coins on ebay until they clean up their house. biggfredd is right. Unfortunately think of this. There well may be thousands of members here on this forum. How many do you think would spend any time complaining to ebay? And with virtaully millions of people, all over the world using ebay, what percentage would ever even know of our futile attempts. IF, and that is a big IF, you could get every member of every coin forum on the internet to complain to ebay about forgeries, do you really think they would listen or care? Like most buisnesses, ebay just laughs all the way to the bank.

There are less that 100 active members it appears on this forum. I doubt we will do any good boycotting or reporting item by item. But, if we report the ones that have thousands of items listed that are clearly violating the " ebay rules". Maybe we can get ebay to police themselves a little bit. For example this guy has 3400+ listing containing silver in the title. He then says that there is no silver in his items. Dear customer,
Thank you for your interest in our items.
The Tibetan silver is a kind of zinc alloy, not contain sliver. it is different from 925 sterling silver. But it is popular all over the world. Hope you are clear about my explanation.
If any further questions, please feel free to contact me. it is my honor to help.

To be fair, "German silver" is not real silver either. Both terms are well-known in the jewelry trade--ultimately the issue is one of quality, not exact terminology. Quote:if novices here can tell fakes, ebay can train (and pay) an expert. After all, they're the ones profiting from the system. that ebay needs to take more ownership for the abusers of their site. Something for coin collectors to consider is that counterfeit coins are a minor subset of a much larger problem: ie the trafficking of fake/forged "luxury goods", which includes fashion items, watches, gemstones, etc. Conceivably, ebay could run an office of 100+ people who did nothing more than familiarize themselves with specific (genuine) retail niches and their respective forgeries. To their credit, ebay has teamed up with manufacturers to root out fakes on their site. I know, because I was involved in a sting involving Swiss watch forgeries a few years ago, something which ebay could not accomplish on their own. A lot is said about the Chinese creating a "counterfeiting problem" when the reality is...this is has been an aspect of business in Asia since Roman times. It's simply more glaring today due to China's growing manufacturing capacity. Yet, from long ago, people have come to the region looking for "bargains" on items of value. Many westerners are simply greedy, supposing the locals don't know what they're selling, and become easy marks for opportunistic sellers to profit from their ignorance/arrogance. Here is a classic example.I would suggest the trade of counterfeit coins on ebay isn't all that different. Ultimately, people need to educate themselves, and if something looks too good to be true, then it probably is--stop kidding yourself!

A couple of links to ponder and educate ourselves. German silver link, of course it contains no silver either. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_silver Tibetan Silver, "metallurgical testing of twelve items in 2007 offered for sale on ebay as Tibetan Silver indicated that the articles frequently contained no silver whatsoever. Tests also found that high levels of lead and other dangerous metals such as arsenic were present." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tibetan_silver

I asked someone who bought some "sterling" bracelets in Mexico: Do you think a kid smart enough to mine and manufacture silver and make bracelets is so stupid he'll sell for 20 cents on the dollar?

I have about 40 of these in my inbox on ebay. I spent 30 min reporting counterfeit coins. Dear , Thanks for reporting this listing to us. I investigated this listing and confirmed that it violated our Selling Currency policy. As a result, I removed the listing. Again, thank you for your report. We appreciate your help in keeping ebay a safe and reputable forum to conduct business. Not A Registered User. In this case, the ebay member is nuked and this would be the error you would see when you tried to view their profile.

The influx of fakes from China extends to not only Silver coins I'm afraid. This guy seems to be selling fake French brass 50 Francs. Not sure why as they are not that valuable - maybe they mistook them for a valuable coin? This is, of course, listed with a plethora of fake "silver" coins. While this particular auction - or set of auctions -is labelled as copy - fair enough - I just wish they wern't so many around. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Replica-195...em3a6dab48d2

He did clearly state that his merchandise is marked "COPY" and his posted image is also clearly marked "COPY." The vendor even mentioned that sent items can take longer than normal if sent to different locations outside his local mailing area.
I do understand your concern though.
