I should be so lucky. This beauty is coming back in a Body Bag because NGC says it has an "altered surface". It does have beautiful toning, but evidently our "Master Graders" had concerns. If you're around SuperDave - guess my earlier concern was warranted after all. I will probably send it to another TPG for a second opinion. This coin is too striking to suffer such an ignoble fate. My opinion stands, especially knowing the coin came from one of the best judges of horseflesh posting at Coin Community. NGC wimped out.

Thats a beautiful Morgan.
So it's the rainbow toning they have issue with?

I agree with you SD, but we truly are at the whim and fancy of the graders on high aren't we? They really DO run the railroad it seems. I had thoughts of parlaying this 38mm jewel into an Antietam commemorative, but I'm thinking she deserves a better fate and will spend the rest of my life (not hers) next to her earlier and later cousins in my Type Set. I could not imagine a nicer, more genuine addition. Good on ya.

Is NGC suggesting that toning is AT?
That toning doesn't look deliberate--what is NGC seeing that I'm not?

That evidently is what they're suggesting. To really appreciate it, you need to have the coin in hand. I guess they thought it was too good to be from a natural process. I'm switching TPG's anyway (tough talk for "I'm taking my toys and going home!")

Just got her back home and snuggled between an 1872 Liberty Seated (that came back AU details ) and a 28S Peacenik). There she will remain.....
