Unless the coin has been kept in some sort of vacuum or under argon or something, I find it improbable that it hasn't developed any color over 80+ years, particularly when you're talking about pre-depression coins when it wasn't as common to save rolls of uncirculated coins. Any time I see a pre-30s, blast-white silver coin, I suspect it's been dipped. That's just my opinion though.

I generally like toning, unless it's really over the top.

Dollars were the exception. Even in the late 60s, the gubmint had millions of newly minted $ piled in bags of 1000.

It's no secret around here that I dislike toning of any kind. I consider toned coins "damaged" as that's not how they were produced.

You beat me to that one. Exactly about what I'd say.
Naturally there are even web sites for Toned Coins though.

The gubmint got 30 bucks a pop for most of them, so they didn't do too shabby.

I think that MS-69 and MS-70 coins are generally not toned. For any grade below that, toning is usually not a problem so long as it does not detract seriously from the eye appeal of the coin.

I've seen a number of toned MS-69 coins in auction archives (e.g. this dime).

To a novice, that toning really complicates grading. It makes the coin look, uh, less appealing.

How's that for PC?

I didn't look to see what that 39 D Merc sold for, but I'll bet the videos sold it, not the pnotos. The photos make it look like a wet dog.

I would like to show you these two coins I have.
Same type - Denmark 1 krone, same year 1898 and same Danish grade 0 (that is MS 6? something).
The toned one was described as beautiful by the Danish auction house.
I ended up paying the same for each coin.

I love both coins, I just love the toned one a little more.

I'm of the same opinion. I like the toned coin.

But both beautiful. You can stare at these for hours.

Well, I have a lot of crappily toned coins, no where near that tone, but my opinion says that tone doesn't really matter as long as the coin isn't really worn and has good lust (mirror finish, shinyness) so, I think that your coin is good and a lot better than a lot of mine.

I thought the dime was ugly! I too do not like toned coins.

$8,337.50 with the juice, the videos consisted of someone rotating the slab to show off the cartwheel and boy did it ever have some booming luster
