Thanks for the opinions. If I was looking to buy a high value coin I would have done better with my homework, but it never occurred to me that people would mess with a coin that is only worth a few bucks in MS. If he is willing to cancel the transaction that would be for the best. If not I'll probably just keep the coin since it would cost me more than a dollar to send it back, but he'll probably get at least a neutral review if he refuses.

That's why my first p,d,s set of steel cents turned out to be plated. I didn't do my homework because I thought that no one would fake or replate those bad boys. It is really common these days though.

He retouch the pictures to make it look better. I have bought from that seller once and coin was clean with hairline scratches.

These sellers wouldn't know a real "scare better date" if one hit them upside the head.

You are now the not so proud owner of a replated 1943 cent.

At least your not out too much money. I wouldn't mind getting a BU PDS set of these at some point but I'd have to check here first to see it they are the real deal.

It looks replated to me. The fields should be smooth which they are not. And like desertgem said, "look at the edge. When they replate, the edge is plated also, whereas the unplated cent has a visible steel core."

I too think possibly replated but from the photos, just not 100% sure. Wish Coppercoins would jump in on this one. That set shown on that same aution for $3.50 for all three looks much better and for that price, even if plated wouldn't be to bad a purchase. It is really getting difficult to find those in decent shape, coated or not. Remember once worn, plating will only make it look shinny but will not bring back details like the lines in the Wheats on the reverse. I'm presently up to 2,543 of those Steel Cents. Lots of all kind of plated ones too. So far only 3 of the Copper ones. Almost a roll of the Chromed ones. They are a fun type of coin.

Thanks again for the comments. If I can't get the auction cancelled I'll hang onto the coin as a good lesson both for me and for anyone new to coin collecting that I come across. Had I done this on fake a 1916 D Merc I'd probably have a fit, but the amount I'm out here is chump change so I won't get too stressed.

Put them in an Album and no one would ever know. If you try to sell them in about 100 years, by then no one would care either.

I can't be sure from the epics if it's re-plated or not. What I wonder is why would anyone go through the trouble of re-plating a steel cant? He obviously didn't make a lot of money of the auction. (except from the shipping) and that's not enough to warrant re-plating. I bought some very nice 43 Wheaties at a gun show last spring. A Dad and son had a table with some coins and military stuff so I doubt they were scam artists. I paid $1 each for the coins and didn't have to pay the shipping. Personally I think the coins are authentic but the seller was trying to make money on the shipping. I've dealt with ebay enough to know that's how some sellers make their money

Just wanted to follow up on this coin. It arrived today and I'm sure it is replated. The edge is as nice and shiny as the faces of the coin, no steel core to be seen. In the end it only cost me 99 cents to learn my lesson. I bought a T1 1913 Buffalo nickel at the same time from this guy and he only charged me the shipping cost for one coin so I just consider that cost to go to the Buffalo. The Buffalo is pretty nice, probably EF or AU, though it might have been cleaned, but I'm not certain. I've always found Buffalos to be tough coins to grade and tell if it was cleaned compared to other coins. Anyway, it is a nice coin, and if it is cleaned it isn't harsh, so I'll just enjoy it in my 7070! As for the steel cent, I'll put it in a 2x2 and keep it as a reminder to always do my homework before buying a coin that might be tampered with. I think what really got me on that cent is that it is a pretty high grade. Had it been VF instead of AU it probably would have raised red flags. While I won't rule out buying from him again I will be much more cautious about his coins next time. Anyway, thanks again for the enlightening discussion!
