ebay item 180747177532
Is being described as a 2001 $1/10c mule.
I am certain it is not a mule, but what is it?
A friend of mine has described finding something just like this.

I think it's just a Cud on it. To be a mule I thought it would have the 10c all around the inner rim?

As I understand it, the "double rim" is, more often than not, less than 360 deg.

The more famous mule is from 2000, but I've never found one:

2001 is memorable because of rotated dies: but I've never found one of them either.

Having a look at the one on ebay, I'm seriously wondering if this 2001 mule might be a new variety: I look forward to Yass's comments.

looks like a miss strike or it could be a bit of creative PMD

Yes, would also like to hear what Yass has to say...
I originally dismissed this with the thought "just Cud with some rim doubling" but then the coin still looks a little odd to me, seems like it is not quite round, like it was out of collar(?), but that could be a trick on the photo or me old eyes! then looking at it again, Trout1105 may be on to something with PMD...

I sent the seller a message letting him know that it's not a mule, but a common minor off-centre strike and that with the small rim Cud, it might be worth $2 - $4, and no more.

I'll see if he modifies or pulls the listing in the next couple days, and if not, I might see if ebay will take some action.

The amount of double rim is not what makes a mule of the 2000 MoRoos dollars. It's the fact that the obverses were struck using a 10c die, so the effigy is smaller, and the double rim is usually around half the coin or a little more, sometimes all the way around, but not always. .

The coin is not a mule. The rim Cud looks interesting. I have 22 x 2001 with rim Cuds, but I think they were all on the Reverse. Its a bummer not having access to my coins and having to work off an excel database. It looks like mint damage and is probably a keeper, but I would like to look at (especially the reeding) in my hand. And I agree with nancy, it is not worth $15.

I have at least 16 x CoF $1's all with rim Cuds, 4 are on the Obverse in these positions:
11.30 12.00
4.00 5.00
5.00 6.30 (X2)

I did write to the seller and explained why the coin was not a mule.
-The whole die needs to be slightly smaller - not just a step in the rim
-All mules so far are from 2000
