Roberts shop every other day, over a period of 17 years, from 1973, when I was working in Australia Square, less than 100 metres from the shop. I sold an Australian gold type set with Adelaide Pound, and about 150 Roman coins, which included 4 gold pieces, on consignment through M.R. Roberts in 1976. I still have all of the records of this transaction, complete with the sale price of each coin. The proceeds comprised about half of the deposit on my first house. I may not have the coins, but I still have my wife! I used to scavenge the junk boxes on a regular basis. Some of my acquisitions from that period would be worth well over $50 each now. BTW, have you any idea of the weight of the planchet, and perhaps what coin it was intended for? M.R. Roberts, in their monthly bulletin, most probably advertised this item. Do you have a record of this? Perhaps you could give the shop a phone call, and find if they can remember some details of this piece. At $4k, I think the price of this wrong planchet error is too high. 15 years ago, I was buying wrong planchet errors from the British Royal Mint for around the $50 mark, from M.R. Roberts. I currently have a client near town hall so usually drop into Downies every other day or so to check out their specials table, and about once every two weeks or so I walk down to Wynyard to M are Roberts for a look see. They are great guys and quite often put things aside for me - there is nothing better than waking in the the shop and hearing "Oh, I have something for you" - great service. This is what I heard a few days ago and was able to pick up some nice items, but also learnt that I had just missed this one... You are correct that it is their November Numi$News bulletin released today. Here is a larger clip showing their commentary. (in hindsight I should have credited them with the first photo - mea culpa) I was also a bit taken aback by the price, but there you go, it sold... and I am not sure I would have been able to resist even at that price as it is soooo spectacular! The RAM takes a dim view of their employees making oddball things like this, because of the obvious advantage that can be had illegally by the employees of the Mint. Because of this, I think it is a genuine error, rather than a Mint sport. It is good that you have confirmed via Numi$News where the original planchet came from. Report this Post to the Staff

Sounds like a rogue blank got mixed up in the drum of blanks striking the 1991 50c. You'd want to weigh the coin and check it's composition to be sure it might have been a New Zealand blank. Universal Coin CO had their gold and silver testing x-ray fluorescence machine at the Adelaide ANDA last week which could have tested such a coin to determine it's composition. They use this machine to test gold purity of items that they buy. MR Roberts often has some stunning errors in their catalogue which I always receive later in the week of issue (maybe in my post office box today) so I always miss out and the good stuff has been sold. A couple of years ago I was in their shop must have been a Friday pre-ANDA show. They wouldn't show me any of their coins and I left empty handed. I had lots of money to spend too. I guess it pays to be known to your coin dealer, but alas I lived 500km away at the time so I couldn't be a "regular". Report this Post to the Staff
