Silver if we're talking strictly about the potential upside in percentage terms.

both
speculate on the potential huge increase in the value of silver while sitting back on the strength and stability of the gold

A lot of factors will influence this decision but the good news is that you don't need to make this decision immediately or all at once. You could, for example, start out collecting silver and then add a little gold later on. Considering that the gold to silver price ratio is around 55 to one right now, history indicates that this is probably a better time to be buying silver. If the ratio declines to, say, 30 to 1 or even less than that, then you can sell some of the silver and buy some gold with the proceeds. If the ratio returns to the 50-60 to 1 area or higher, sell some of the gold and buy silver. Repeat as the opportunities come along. By doing this, you should end up with more ounces at a lower cost than if you just did occasional metals purchases.

I agree with. Ed's reasoning plus not knowing the amount of $ you are spending factors in as well. Good luck in whichever you pick. Platinum is still priced lower than gold and that could be an option as well
