Mathieu - almost everything that the guy who posted this piece has put on that site is quite probably fake. Scary how readily some of the Spanish-speakers seem to accept those pieces unquestioningly.
Let it be noted also that 1748 seems to be one of THE common dates that the Asians produce...

realeswatcher : which site are you talking about ? I took the pictures from numismaticageneral.com (my second home - spanish speaking) Or maybe he posted it in identificacion-numismatica.com as well ? (I don't spend much time there ...). Anyway, I'm amazed with all the fakes I see on this place as well !

Regal Silver over a lower base alloy. This base alloy is normally brass but can be copper with trace zinc or lead but so far "never" bronze (Cu/Sn). These all being offered are plated. Not sure of your definition of Birmingham restrike?

Actually, from the other one: imperio-numismatico.com/t35702-8-reales-fernando-vi-ceca-mejico-1748 He's also posted these... If my recognition of Spanish cognates combined with Google Translate is reasonably close, almost everyone seems to be buying into these being beautiful authentic pieces. No one even so much as questions the 1776!: imperio-numismatico.com/t22491-8-reales-de-carlos-iii-sevilla-1776 imperio-numismatico.com/t22529-8-reales-de-carlos-iii-potosi-1788-flan-grande imperio-numismatico.com/t22548-8-reales-de-carlos-iv-sevilla-1788 Do people really think the patina on those coins is genuine? Even if you were completely naive as to what's out there, shouldn't that alone raise eyebrows? It's amusing, regarding the "1776" piece, the poster makes a comment to the effect "I came cross a group of 8 Reales and this was the best..." and Google Translate rendered that as "I made a batch of 8 reales coins". Perhaps Google Translate is smarter than we think...

The later Class 2 pieces I know swamperbob has given information as to their characterstics previously on this channel. This certainly is the most complex information ... in determining Class 1 (Early 19thC) from Class 2 (Late 19thC). For Sheffields (Class 1) in high grade there may be no way other than to plate match once the book comes out in 2013/2014. If it's an off-metal (copper, brass, bronze, tin (high)) its Class 1. German silver is more likely Class 2 since it was not really available in U.K. till 1830 but this research is still on-going since pai-tong from China was available. Not easy. If I was buying a regal portait I would just buy in a slab or look for good weight (26 grams) and no signs of peeling on the surface if buying in the raw. Full denticles and keep your fingers crossed. Remember Sheffields will probably be worth as much as regals 2-3 years from now anyway ... think slab ... if you do not agree on the above for regal buying Portraits ... is my opinion.

There appears to my untrained eye to be a problem/clue under the "u" in "VTRAQUE" (one the date side/obverse(?)) Under the U there is what appears to be a "drip mark" that is runny and wzxy looking...unlike an actual die crack which, in my limited experience, usually looks crisp and jagged like a lightning bolt. Any comments?

realeswatcher : I didn't saw those coins, but I have to admit that the one you have posted looks pretty odd :D I sometime saw coins which had been cleaned / repatinated, but this one has something special (including the design ...)

There seems to be some talk ( in spain )about the coins being from a shipwreck, cleaned then re-patina? So if they needed to be cleaned, would not the faces look more corroded? I do own some nice Chinese ones with the same (to me ) looking brown patina.

With regard to the coins on the "Imperio Numismático" pages, this is really incredible that nobody seems to be suspecting anything. So many different coins and so similar their look...

MathieuMa The patina treatment shows up better on my 1893 Morgan ( copy )so included that photo. The pillar 8r has a total fantasy edge but does show similar surfaces?

Wow, that pillar is indeed a very bad copy :p The fake patina is interesting, looks like something was applied, and the coin was cleaned after. It doesn't have the same usual color as chinese recent patina, which is dark black usually.

I have a 1748 8 Reales....I do not know anything about coins, but do see a few differences between yours and mine. I hope mine is not a fake. It belonged to my late husband and I am not sure where he even acquired it from.
