This could be a deceptive alteration produced by placing another cent on top of your coin, wrapping them in a soft cloth and squeezing them together in a vise. The image on the reverse of the other cent would have been pressed into the surface of your coin, producing the reverse (mirrored) image. Or, maybe it's a genuine error! I expect the error experts on the forum will know the real story.

To me, it looks like a glue impression i.e. two coins glued together then pulled apart, leaving behind a design in the glue remaining on one of the coins. This is my opinion because it appears that the affected area has a distinctive border around it with a decidedly unnatural look to it.

Does it feel like the area is raised above the normal surface of the coin?

yes the area is raised. I tried to pick at the area but could not peel anything off.
