Can anyone tell me if this is a low 9?It looks lower than the 5 & 8, but not the 1. Or are my eyes playing with me? Thanks!

Do you have a photo of the obverse? Any die cracks?

Can die cracks "wear out"? I think there is one between the E and the G of REGINA, but you can't really see it with this pic. If I zoom the original picture file, I can see it. I can also see it coin in hand with a loupe. Can a crack wear out back to smooth metal? I have larger sized pics that I can provide. Thanks everyone.

Too bad it's not the case with the scratches.

Looks like a Haxby PC59-80a1. Is that a die crack inside the C of VICTORIA? Here is a link that may help.

Yes it is nybird. Thanks for pointing that out. I've read that there are hundreds of varieties for this coin, and I'm just starting with large cents. Is this a rarer one?

I am not for sure on rarity as Jim Haxby does not publish that information. In my personal collection of about 600 1859 cents, I have found 10 PC59-80a1 coins. So at least in the coin shops I have been too it seems easy to find. Here is the good news, since there are so many (up to now) undocumented die pairs for the 1859 cents every coin is an adventure, your next one may be far less common or even a new find. Enjoy the hunt.

Thanks again nybird, that link was very helpful. While having a closer look at the coin, I noticed there is also what appears to be a planchet flaw on the reverse, behind the O in ONE. I think this will be a fun coin to collect...

Thanks dan-in-crystal lake. Btw, I'll contribute my modest collection to your census. Very interesting idea.
