This coin belongs to A Kimmel of Paragon Numismatics, and is considered the finest toned 1921 Morgan in existance. Enjoy! Image: 1921moose.jpg73.42 KB Edited by hadleydog 02/01/2007 1:11 pm

That looks like the kind of coin that you need to hold in your hand to truly appreciate. And I would love to see it in my hand.....

The term "moose" is used to describe a real standout coin, one with eye appeal that pretty much crosses boundaries of taste and preference. It's generally used for toners, but other coins can qualify. Here's one that I feel is worthy of "moose," "monster," or anything else you'd care to call it: 1895 NGC PF69CAM, image shamelessley ripped from Anaconda Rare Coins

that coin looks artificially toned to me and in my book that makes it junk.or at least not a nice coin. I do agree though that it is a very pretty coin as far as the colors go but I wouldn't waste my time with it. that's just my opinion so don't flip your wig I'm not into AT coins. now show me a coin that has toned naturally and I would agree that's a nice coin. Garylcsr,
I have a feeling that if Hadleydog posted this pic with the info along with it, that it is not an AT coin. He is pretty much the resident guru on toned coins as far as I have been reading, so I would trust that this one is not junk.....
That being said, I'm sure Hadley will reply before too long to your comments. Maybe I'm missing the joke that this is AT, but I would have thought the little "Devil" icon would have been included in the post if that was the case.

sorry no joke there. I don't mean to say that the coin is junk that was a bad choice of words but myself I would not waist my time with an AT coin

Agreed. I think most would agree with that actually. I meant the "joke" comment on a joke that potentially I didn't understand with Hadley's initial post. certainly not your comments per say. I was just trying to note that I doubt it was AT if he was the posting person unless he was making fun at something... Written words can sure come across wrong, even after I reread my own posts an hour later. Sorry, was merely making an observation, certainly not pointing fingers or arguing in anyway.

Hey Gary, Welcome to the boards! Let me assure you Gary, the coin is naturally toned. There are several telltale signs on this Morgan that the coin is not AT......in other words, the coin displays colors and combinations that the coin docs simply cannot reproduce. Textile with multiple colors are NOT possible to replicate. If you look at the dots (the one between the cap and the U), you will see a yellow center, surrounded by red and cobalt. No doc in the world can replicate this. Also, the dots are the right size.....a little smaller than earlier years as the weave of the 1921 bags were tighter. Different colors on recesses as opposed to the relief......the docs can't do that, either. There is shadowing around the stars and date, and the color transitions are correct and smooth. Yup, she's the real deal! Most people have never been exposed to some of the miracles that have been pulled out of old mint bags and have every right to question what they have not seen before......it's how we learn. As to the AT'd coins being worth melt, Gary, I couldn't agree with you more.

Hello hadleydog and thank you for the welcome. I am very sorry if I stepped on your toe's with my last post. i have seen a few toned coins but I am in no way an expert on them. I like the coins that have a natural tone to them. not enough to purchase one but they are very pretty coins and yes I do have a few (none purchased toned) and what makes this particular coin seem AT to me is the very straight lines. I have not seen one that had the lines that gave the coin the appearance that it was dipped or added to the coin. my NT coins all have the ring like tone starting from the rim. from the paper that they were stored in. my 1958 double mint set is a great example, I don't have the camera at this moment but have a few coins that I will take photo's of to show you what I mean. I am positive that you know what I mean. by the way what do's the Rev look like? Thanks hadleydog and every other member that has or may get into this discussion and please forgive me if I seem negative on this subject, I am not. but I do get taken wrong on occasion Gary
