1982 Lincoln Memorial Cent / LMC Cracked Rim? Die Break?

pyrbob Rest in Peace United States 1943 Posts	Posted 04/11/2012 06:33 am What you are seeing is the line made from the edge of the die. A die is slightly smaller in diameter than the collar so if the force of the strike is strong enough metal is pushed up into the little gap between the collar and the die. When the pushed up metal is high it is called a fin and has some collectable value. But the above coin isn't at that stage so it is just a normal strike. Report this Post to the Staff

I found another one, and the gap is about high enough that I could fit my finger nail under if I tried. I googled fin penny error and couldn't find any pictures to get an idea of what they look like. Notice on the edge how the metal squeezed up to form the fin and actually spilled over the top of the collar giving the effect of a partial collar at the top of the fin. Report this Post to the Staff
