I am not sure if this is truly a S over D without cleaning it somewhat. Any suggestions?

Use olive oil with NO RUBBING OF THE SIRFACE and that will help!

Olive oil is not the right thing to use on coins. It is a vegetable based oil, and vegetable based oils are organic and will rot. Mineral oil is the proper oil to use on coins. It takes about a month to see a marked difference.
