Official-Take-A-Penny,-Leave-A-Penny-Giveaway!

How many of you have seen these before?

I began to think--what for me describes best the reason and obsession I have for collecting cents?

It occurred to me that it is many things, but the two that stand out most to me is:

1. Each penny to me resembles a moment frozen in time. They are also tokens of more than just money, but a token of history. All the hands it has touched, all the places it has gone, all the people whom I may never know and their stories.

2. The thrill of finding an oddity or that penny you've been looking for for quite some time may just show up unexpected, or you may just happen to stumble upon it one day!

So here is my idea....

I will start this giveaway by offering a penny, which I will disclose the year and mint. From there, one volunteer who needs this penny will reach out to me and I will ship them this penny.

That person will then select one penny that they no longer need, or may have a duplicate of. The idea is that it does NOT need to be a key date or a rare item unless of course you feel so inclined--and they will then ship that penny to the next person.

When that person receives the penny they MAY or MAY NOT decide to keep it. Completely up to them. If they do keep it, then they select an item they have to be shipped to the next recipient--or they can just pass along the one they just received.

The key here is the mystery and surprise.

DO NOT POST WHAT YOU'VE RECEIVED OR WHAT YOU ARE SENDING!

The only thing other than general convo that should be posted here is the status of trade...

ex. PENNY SENT TO: PENNY RECEIVED FROM:

also, all exchanges of address are to be done via private message between the sender and recipient. DO NOT POST ADDRESSES HERE.

I will monitor this post to keep it in line!

After 5 trades, we will then announce the previous 4, so be sure to take pictures of what you send and receive, that way when its time to disclose what has been traded, we can all see!

To get this started, I will need one volunteer who needs ONE 2012-P BU Lincoln Shield cent. First person who needs it and replies here will receive it.

To get this going smoothly, we will compile a list of 15 members in the order in which they reply to this post, to serve as a start up sheet for players/contestants.

Keep in mind, if you participate, this will cost you postage. It will be the senders responsibility for postage.

I will send the penny as soon as we have one volunteer and 15 players..

OK READY, SET, GO!!!

If I read this correctly, the person receiving the next penny, will not get to choose which penny they need. They will receive what ever penny gets sent to them. Is this correct? If so, I can see why nobody is playing. A lot of postage required for sending one cent, that you may already have. Nice thought though.

Steve

P.S. Yes I do need a 2012 P (also 2012D, 1914D & 1931S)

Sorry it took so long to reply to your post -- I saw it yesterday, but I felt I should check to see if I had that coin.

I couldn't find one. But I don't feel like I 'need' it.

However, I will volunteer to go first or anywhere else you see fit to put on your list.

triggersmob, you make a point about the cost of the postage, not to mention the trip to the post office. I guess the fun of it is getting a coin from somebody in the CCFamily. Besides...you never know.

For me the problem will be getting photos. I have tried and tried and my photos stink. But I figure that better pictures will be taken by the sender and the receiver so that kind of takes the pressure off.

Man, as soon as I see this and think "sweet I would love to potentially get a cent I need and get rid of one of the millions I don't need", it's already too late. Hopefully I can get in on the next attempt, perhaps halves instead? People might be more willing to take the risk on postage if the possible reward is higher.

I think it would work just fine if the person that gets the first coin
then posted the coin he was giving away. Then you would actually get
respondents because they know for sure they need the coin they will be
getting. Without posting the coin that is coming your way, there is no
way for someone to know if they need it or not.

So, if the first person takes your 12-D, that they NEED. They are obligated
to put up something from their duplicates that is a reasonable equivalent
coin in value and/or condition. So that, for them, might be a 1957 in
BU... For example. Then the next person that speaks up will be someone that
knows for a fact they need a BU 1957, and they will be obligated to post
their equivalent duplicate offering... and so on.

If the people don't know they need the cent, their is no carrot to get them
to take the penny and leave a penny.
