The Mint decided to stop production of all its fractional platinum Eagles after 2008. When the program was launched in 1997, platinum was under $500 an ounce and sales of all sizes of the coins were fairly strong. In 2008, the spot price was knocking on the door of $2,000. This drove many collectors away from the series. Sales of each denomination of the coins amounted to ~5,000 or less in 2008. With such low sales volumes, the Mint decided to continue the series with just one coin â€" the one ounce version. Collecting history one coin or medal at a time! (c) commems. All rights reserved.
