Would be neat IMO to have one exclusively for ancients (and maybe medieval). Preferably for multiple seasons and one of us could organize them, or each of us taking turns. Thoughts? Would anyone be interested?

Too complex for as few people as we have here? We could post and guess but do notice that it needs to be coins actually purchased and not listings suitable for "Guess what some fool thinks this is worth?" Perhaps this could be rolled into the existing contest by having a category "Coin I bought this year for under $10"?

ValiantKnight => for the record, I have an ancient coin in this current Season #30 Guess The Price competition (what a coincidence, eh?) ...

=> and as you know, 90% of the coins in that GTP game are USA coins, so I can hardly wait to hear the whining once jbuck lists my ancient coin and everybody has to take a guess on its price!!

NOTE => but I think that your idea has some merit (Guess The Price for Ancient Coins) ... hmmm, but because there would probably only be a 10-20 of us guessing what each other paid for our coins, we'd soon figure each other out fairly quickly:

Some Typical Examples:

stevex6 - take the correct price of the coin, then double it and add $100 ... answer > $100

jwharper - take the correct price of the coin, then divide it in half, but then refuse to pay more than $10 ... answer < $10

dougsmit - good luck guessing the price of doug's coins, because he'll only list coins that are one-of-a-kind ... so there is no correct answer

....... yah, I'm already mad at the game!!

Stevex6 is right. Most of my coins are either bargains that I would not buy for a 'fair' price or things I really want where I paid twice what any of you would consider. He is doubly correct that we each have our characteristics when it comes to our degree of cheapness. I really hate to see beginners paying high prices for junky coins when the same (also junky) coins are available for a lot less. On the other hand, there are coins that I really, really have wanted for a long time and might pay more than I should just because I have been looking for so long. Both of these could easily be the same coins in most of your eyes since you might consider all Falling Horseman the same while I consider some of them worth 20 times as much as others in the same grade. Would you pay more for a coin with mintmark AMB than one with ANB? I did. Do you care which legion number is on your Septimius or Antony legionary denarius? I do. Would you like a coin in EF+ condition that had the mintmark off the flan? I don't. Stevex6 is right and we would figure each other out quickly.

That would be so true lol

Dougsmit sure there's a chance it would be a bit predictable, since we have some idea of each others buying habits. But I don't expect dead-on guesses within a few minutes of the coin being posted and having that happen every round. But I do see your point about coins being much more rare than other seemingly identical coins because of one different letter or officina mark, and how probably most of us would be way off because of ignorance of the different varieties and/or influenced by how much we would be comfortable paying. Unfortunately that is something that will never be stamped out of guessing contests like these IMO

Anyone else have any opinions? (Note: it doesn't have to be completely the same as the original GTP; contest name, rules can be different)

On that note--the guessing game could be useful for a beginner like myself to get a 'better feel' on prices, particularly for Roman coins. Sometimes I appreciate a reminder that holding out for a better deal pays off.

Hmmm? ... well, maybe I'll vote via another name, so my ignorance will be deflected slightly? (maybe I'll change it to stevex3?) ...

=> I am always game for any type of games!!

Just a thought: I don't know about modern coins but my guess on ancients would be very different if I knew where the coin was bought as well as by whom. You may not understand or approve but it is a fact that the same coin offered in a glossy color catalog sale or purchased privately through one of the really high end dealers (mostly guys you never heard of but they have some nice coins!) will bring several time what the coin would bring at a 'normal' sale by a no name dealer who has a presence online. We regularly see ebay sellers pricing their coins as if they were the same as Berk or CNG and I suppose some of them sell for enough to cover the ebay fees even if the coin is not all that great.

The other problem is many of you could take a photo I posted and do a little research to find where I bought it and how much I paid. Some of you know my ten favorite sources so it would not take all that long to find many of them.

Post the link when your coin comes up. I won't be participating in the general game (couldn't tell one MS from another) but it will be fun to see what people guess.

From the feel of things, it seems like my idea is getting some good reception. Anyone else approve or disapprove? JW, Gil-galad, Eng5858, other ancient collectors, would you guys be interested in playing this contest, and what suggestions+opinions would you have?
