I believe tgauchsin is right, regardless of silver up or gold down, only focus on the ratio:
Let say right now 50oz of silver = 1oz of gold, I buy 50oz silver (by selling gold, regardless of price), When the ratio become 25oz of silver = 1oz of gold, I convert my 50oz of silver to gold (holding 2oz gold) When the ratio become 50oz of silver = 1oz of fold, I convert my 2oz of gold to silver (holding 100oz of silver).
It's easy in theory but NOT so easy in reality to do so since there are many other factors involve.

Instead of using weight for the ratio ever consider using dollars (i.e. X dollars of silver for every Y dollars of gold)?

I have 5 rolls of Franklin halves that I will sell off at 60, 70, 80, 90 and 100. I don't buy much at above 20x face value though unless the coin has numismatic premium above that.

Quote: A government take over of things like health care just makes it more costly and inefficient Exactly, BB21! Reminds me of a bumper sticker that read: "If you think that health care is expensive now, just wait 'til it's free!".

I started saving silver coins...collectible and junk years ago. Most of my silver (90%) and especially the junk coins I got at face value. So I agree with Barryg I'm in it for the long haul. I also agree with trout1105 about saving it for retirement. I've retired and now I plan on saving it for the kids inheritence. I also agree with IndianGoldEagle better in my vault than the banks vault with their 1% interest if I sold it. On thing I learned a long time ago...Silver is the poor mans Gold. And if the world ends as we know it, silver will spend a lot better than the paper we call money now. Thats my humble opinion about Silver. I must say that all of the replies are a most interesting read.

That is, unless we revert to Bottle Caps as currency. What's more valuable, 30 pounds of silver, or a can opener?
Depends on the circumstances.

If you hit the can hard enough with 30 pounds of silver it will open.

I bet you could get a lot more for a can opener than a kilo silver coin after the revolution comes ;)

As you guys have said, its siutational If its a simple, "the dollar isn't worth anything anymore" than silver would be extremely coveted but in a situation where many people die, and like, zombies come and kill everyone, and nukes and everything is in panic and like, I need a can opener and screw silver, then I need a can opener. and screw silver. did I say zombies? what?

I say I would sell at $50 but the truth is I love collecting the stuff, so I probably wouldn't. I'm just hoping we can get back into the $20's again by the first of the year . That way I can use my work bonus to buy a bunch of SAE and a few 100 oz JM's, They stack up great and I just love the sound they make when they bang together.

Quote: I bet you could get a lot more for a can opener than a kilo silver coin after the revolution comes ;) So your plan is to hoard cases of can openers? Quote: I bet you could get a lot more for a can opener than a kilo silver coin after the revolution comes ;) That could work! On the other hand, a sharp hunting knife is a VERY handy tool and it will open cans quite nicely. Quote: If you hit the can hard enough with 30 pounds of silver it will open. LOL! Yes, it will! SPLAT! Might be a little hard to recover most of the food, though.

Won't Silver be needed to make bullets to stop the Werewolf and Vampire uprisings?

Yep, but don't forget arrows and crossbow bolts. They should suffice as a "stake in the heart" for vampires. Might have to be a special kind of wood, though.
