I'm trying to wrangle/haggle a deal on this coin ...
a) what do you guys think of this coin?

Jerry, this is one of the best you've posted IMHO (Oh, what the heck, I'm not very humble). I love that reverse. True artistry. I'll bet this one's not cheap.

These are impressive coins in hand, got one myself...  Not uncommon, in that condition I would pay 100-150 $ maybe  |

Thanks Dionysos ... yours is a very nice coin!! I agree with Bing => I think these coins are gorgeous!! Man, 28mm and 27grams must be quite the little fishing-weight, eh? ... okay, I will try to steer my seller towards your price (he's currently a good hundred bucks higher than your suggestion) ... NOTE => I did find a few other examples that had sold in the past and my guy's asking-price was somewhere in the middle (but again, I will try to shave a few skins off of his current asking-price) ... Thanks for your opinions, fellas ...  |

I would make sure also that the greenish spot at the top, on the reverse, is not active corrosion... And it's an AE drachm, not a litra  |

Drachm ... gotcha => hey excellent, maybe the fact that this guy named his coin incorrectly can be my opening remark!? (I smell a handy leverage-point!!) ... then when he's rattled and trying to apologize for mis-represnting his product, I'll come at him with an accusation that his ruddy coin may have an active festering desease on it!! Thanks Dionysos ... at this rate, I'll be paying him to take that piece of garbage out of his ratty ol' collection!!   |

 I have one very slightly different (no doublestrike on obverse) which was $37.50 in 1987. I suggest you dump this one and buy a time machine. Dionysos' coin is a nice example with good surfaces and full legend, IMHO, worth at least $400. Its poor obverse centering is actually an advantage since the rounded flans of these tend to make the legends weak and this one got a good strike on the letters because the flan was thicker there due to the centering. The OP coin has little legend, patchy roughness and the double striking so I'd place it under $100 simply because there are nicer ones to be found. $380? No. I'd call it a litra. Sear 1189 lists it as a litra. I'd suggest not getting into a fight with the dealer over a denomination system difference of opinion. Edited by dougsmit

That's a nice design. I think Steve's and Dionysos' and Doug's commentary provide an interesting contrast.
I have not priced these out, but I would wait around for a nicer example to surface--patience always pays off.

As always, thanks for all of your comments ... I really do regard all of your advice as gospel ...  Hey and don't worry, because as you all know by now "Patience" is my middle-name ... Hmmm? ... no, wait a minute, I think Patience is actually my brother's middle-name? ... yah that's right, Mum and Dad gave him Patience as a middle-name and then they decided to give me the handle "Burro Stupido"  Anyway ... I have already asked him "politely" about the potential bronze disease and about the Litra-Drachm subject, so I will be having at least one more info-exchange with him before this thread has been exhausted ... NOTE => thanks again for all of your advice |

My guy is reasonable and he has one in not as great condition for like $170. I would say no more then$ 200 for it. It is a large old coin and very sexy, worthy of any ancient collection.

Hi A-noob => hey, thanks so much for having my back and trying to scout-out a deal for me!! (I definitely appreciate your efforts, brother) ... ... but as most of you probably already expected, I already pulled the trigger and bought the "OP" ... hey, it is merely the way that I roll (I roll fast and wrecklessly, but I never look back with any regrets!! => man, I love that coin so I am tickled pink with the end-result!!) ... Oh, and just for the record, I did end-up paying a bit more than you guys suggested, but I paid $100 less than the seller's original asking price, so I felt as though I won a small battle ... plus, it is being shipped with two of the obols that I bought a few days ago, so there is 0% added shipping (another small battle won) ... However => overall, I am hoping that this purchase has strengthened my buyer-seller relationship with this dude and will therefore continue to be a mutually successful give-n-take relationship (another haggle-friendly ancient contact) ... NOTE => the dude was on Bing's list of recommended sellers, so overall I'm hoping that the whole process helped set-up a bright future for good ol' stevex6 to blow more cash!! => and although I may not have followed your advice to a "T" (or not at all in some cases), I totally appreciate your comments and I still look forward to your future comments!! Thanks gang ... the coin is coming home to Steve's house!! (yessss) |
