I think they are cool, they either offer the chance to show off coins which the members own or they offer the chance for those who don't have to see coins which may be of interest.

Also the fact that often some history or points of interest relating to the coins is shared makes interesting reading I feel.

This has been a great idea, Steve's brain child. Do get to see great coins and can't always post, but we do get to vote.
I for one would like to keep it going, maybe come up with a little different twist, so you you smart guys need to think and come up with something to add to this.
Maybe if you post a coin give a brief description, what mint it came from, some info about the coin....just say'n...

As I said, I like the Smackdown format. But the argument could be made that we can show off our coins without a contest and without voting. While this may be true, it is also nice to see what others consider the best of any particular theme. The voting gives us each a way to say what we like best without saying anything bad about the other coins entered. My feelings are not hurt if I do not win a contest. These are my "precious" and they remain number one with me.

As long as there is interest and participation, I think we should continue. But without participation it's kinda pointless.

I enjoy the smackdowns very much, it doesn't matter if I win or not. It's a chance to see what others have in there collections that they may not normally post. One thing that surprised me is that there seems to be more folks collecting Greek coins than Roman coins. I thought it would be the other way around.

In my case for the latest smackdown I only had two coins (from my small collection) that would qualify. Both had been shown only two smackdowns ago so I didn't think it good to show them again.

I've enjoyed the smackdowns and would enter again if I can.

I need more coins!

Is there anyone who reads the smackdown threads who has never submitted a coin? If you are one of them, would you be more likely to show a coin if it were not a contest? For example, there was a "green patina" thread recently. Would you show a coin in such a non-contest thread but not in a contest? For me, I love to see the coins others buy. I like them all, the good, the bad, and the ugly. Any format that gets you to show a coin is good for me. It seems both contest and non-contest formats can co-exist. At least with the contest, the winner is forced to think up a theme for the next one, and that keeps the ball rolling. So, I like the smackdowns for that reason, but hope members are happy to use other formats to show and discuss coins.

I think it should be more encouraged to enter a coin - regardless of condition or rarity. Be proud of your worn out coins.

I like the smackdowns and would encourage everyone to enter some. Usually I am not all that proud of what I post, and the ones I show tend to be unremarkable. But it is nice seeing what other people have and what criteria people use to judge "niceness." It is especially nice when a coin sparks discussion, and you never know which ones will. In the end, we are all here because we love these coins and, for me at least, it is not so much a contest as it is a place to compare and explore different types of coins that happen to share whatever the common thread for that week is.

I don't think altered coins should be included in competitions, since the artwork isn't really representative of...

Oh, wait. Did you guys mean "altars"?
