I took a closer look at some 2009 cents I got the other day and I found this one that appears to be an error.Note the extra "finger." I see there are some similar coins for sale on ebay right now so I believe it is a rather common error. Any idea how common this really is?

Not an error but it is a Doubled Die. Doubled die varieties are abundant on the 2009 Formative Years design with a few dozen known varieties. Most of them display very minor thumb doubling but yours is actually one of the nicer varieties, I believe it is 2009P-1DR-024.
