1803 One Cent For Identification / Weak Struck

bobo13 Valued Member Bulgaria 474 Posts	Posted 11/24/2012 12:15 pm Hello, friends Found this coin today in a bulk lot of coins, including some other US-coins 1830-1850s, but this one is weak struck (I think), and the weight is only 10.5 grams. Diameter 28.6/28.8 mm. Can you confirm this coin is original, not replica coin? Report this Post to the Staff

Moe145 Pillar of the Community United States 8904 Posts	Posted 11/24/2012 12:43 pm IMO, it appears to be an authentic 1803 (Large Date, Large Fraction) Large Cent. The slightly off-center minting and the occasional weakness in the strike add to my opinion of authenticity, since that was normal for the time. The weight is bit under and the size a bit over but also (again IMO) within normal parameters of the time. It looks like a nice, corrosion-free example! Report this Post to the Staff

Variety is, I think, S-258, characterized by a die crack through the inside of the D in UNITED (note how it seems angled at the top right inside) and by the position of the highest points of the hair. Looks to be in great shape. VF-20, maybe? Hint: if you paid US$400 or less for that bulk lot, you probably just made your money back. Report this Post to the Staff
