I went on a shopping spree a couple of weeks ago and purchased several coins of the Roman Republic (and others). Since I am on a self imposed exile from buying any coins until next year, I will show these one at a time a week apart. For my first installment I present to you a CN. BLASIO CN.F. Denarius, Crawford 296/1, struck at Rome 112-111 BC: OBV: Mars, helmeted, r., CN. BLASIO CN.F. before, palm behind REV: Juno, Jupiter being crowned by Minerva; monogram in field, ROMA in ex. 18mm

Very nice coin. I don't recall seeing one like yours and I've looked at many lately. Most of them have biga or quadriga on the reverse.

Anoob is correct, and he should be since he turned me onto this coin. It is thought the obverse image is the helmeted head of Scipio Africanus the Elder. This was probably the main reason why I went after this coin. Quote: While it has often been thought the obverse portrait (Mars?) was meant to portray the greatest of the Scipiones, Crawford is more cynical. Nevertheless, the idiosyncratic style of the obverse head does not seem typical of a cult statue of a god...in addition, Scipio Africanus was known to hang out in the temple of Jupiter Capitolinus, the central figure on the reverse. Therefore, in spite of Crawford's doubts, it does seem that one must give credence to the theory that this coin portrays the man who conquered Hannibal at Zama!

I strayed into republicans a couple of years ago and found them quite habit forming. It took some ffort to steal myself away from them. I eventually trimmed my republicans down to just half a dozen Papia varieties.
Nice one. Keep them coming.

IMHO the problem with collecting Republicans is that some are abosolutely beautiful and interesting but many are repetitive and not all that well executed. I can only take so many poorly drawn Roma heads and chariots being driven by someone lacking fine details. I do like many types and have a representative sampling of the common types but could never be a specialist. Add to that the fact that many are not all that well struck making one wonder if production was contracted to the lowest bidder rather than to a professional team. I'll show a better than average coin of C. Claudius Pulcher showing a biga driven by Victory and my favorite Republican from L. Plautius Plancus with facing Medusa and a great reverse scene of four horses led by Aurora that rarely is well struck and all on flan. These are not rare but nice ones are not seen everyday. Some are good style but some show Medusa with a sleepy look. When you collect such things do you accept typical or hold out for exceptional?

Don't settle for less than the best. There have been several rather nice ones in the under $5000 bracket which is what I predict the next one with good strike and centering on both sides will bring. On the other hand we bottom feeders can get the type under $100 on occasion. http://www.acsearch.info/search.htm...lar:358259#0
