Kingdom of Chalkis, Coele-Syria, Ptolemy I, Tetrarch, 85 - 40 B.C.

obverse laureate head of Zeus (or Ptolemy?)
reverse the Dioscuri standing (this is Castor and Pollux, the Gemini...had to look that up).

i didn't know anything about this guy, here's something I found on wikipedia..

Quote:
Ptolemy or Ptolemaeus (Greek: Πτολεμαá¿-ος), son of Mennaeus (Mennæus) was tetrarch of Iturea and Chalcis from about 85 BCE to 40 BCE, in which year he died. He tried to extend his kingdom by warlike expeditions (Strabo, xvi. 2, § 10); and ruled the Lebanon, threatened Damascus, subjugated several districts on the Phoenician coast, and once had Paneas in his hands (Josephus, Ant. xv. 10, §§ 1-3). In fact, the whole of Galilee had formerly been in the possession of the Itureans, and had been taken away from them in 103 BCE by Aristobulus I. (ibid. xiii. 11, § 3).

The Jews thought themselves oppressed by Ptolemy, and hence Aristobulus II, at that time still prince and sent by his mother, Alexandra, undertook an expedition against Damascus to protect it against Ptolemy (ibid. 16, § 3; idem, B. J. i. 5, § 3). Pompey destroyed Ptolemy's strongholds in the Lebanon and doubtless took away from him the Hellenistic cities, as he did in Judaea. When Aristobulus II was murdered by Pompey's party in Judea (49 BCE), his sons and daughters found protection with Ptolemy (Ant. xiv. 7, § 4; B. J. i. 9, § 2). It may be that the national Jewish party at that time depended for support on the Itureans in Chalcis, and perhaps the following statement has reference to that fact: "On the 17th of Adar danger threatened the rest of the Soferim in the city of Chalcis, and it was salvation for Israel" (Meg. Ta'an. xii.).

i guess chalkis was a kindgom in modern day syria.

one more coming I need help on..

I almost bought a drachm with an eagle devouring a snake from chalcis the other week... its now sold...but I tried looking it up and there isn't much information on the place except that it is in Greece and thats where the ships gathered for the Trojan war.

It is spelled both with a C and with a K...I see the same place refered to as bothe Chalcis Euboea province and Chalkis.

Anyway I hope you enjoyed the show ^^ and gratz on your new aquisitions...

Hey Chris-

Did you ever realize how awesome those Persian Dirhams are in hand. It really is incredible, its such fine silver on such a big thin flan it feels so coin like. Out of my coins I think I handle that one the most, its just incredible. Its not tetradrachm chunky but its so awesome in hand, I'm sure it was hard not to buy it having it in hand. Good grabs my friend, I am glad then when I post the non Romans it has that sweeping effect on you guys....buy buy buy...at least until the Misses finds out...

I believe the Sasanian is Khusro II from the AY mint (at or near Eran-khvarrah-Shapur). I am worthless at reading year dates (script at reverse left). Many of these including this one are garbled by multiple striking or the thin flans not having enough metal to fill out completely. This one is better than many but still not clear to my inexpert eyes.

Mine is Meshan (MY mintmark left insert) with year (right insert)year 38? but I'm no good at reading these and always have to employ as much guessing as anything. The site to study is
http://www.grifterrec.com/coins/coins.html

Under sasanian note options for mint ID and date tables as well as lists of sample coins. There are thousands of variations.
