It's quite common place for non collectors to believe a cleaned coin is worth more than a dark toned one. I know a dealer who once said that the # 1 question he's been asked by non-Numismatists over the years is: "Will I get more for my coins if I clean 'em"?

I remember doing that once - I then turned 8 and realized I was wrong to clean my coins. I still have some of them, and they have "re-aged" quite nicely!''

The sad thing is there probably are a few newbies out there who *will* think this is a selling point!

HeHe...every copper that goes into my album is lightly washed in soapy water. Everything else that is not for my personal collection does not get touched.

Lots of my friends ask me about cleaning coins and I let them know it is something that generally should not be done. I always tell them that cleaning coins is for noobs.
