1795-Dollar---1908-And-1924-St-Gauden's-$20

Count the stars on the 1795 Dollar. There are fifteen and not thirteen. What gives?
Vermont and Kentucky!
Vermont joined the Union June 25, 1788.
Kentucky joined the Union June 1, 1792.
So, 15 stars in 1795.
By 1798, it was decided to use only 13 stars for the original 13 colonies.
And 13 stars it remained into the early years of the 20th century.

Now on to the gold $20 piece.

1795-Dollar---1908-And-1924-St-Gauden's-$20

From 1907 to 1911, there were 46 stars around the obverse.
In 1912, there were 48. What gives?
Well, New Mexico and Arizona!
New Mexico joined the Union Jan. 6, 1912.
Arizona joined the Union Feb. 14, 1912.

I wonder. How many coin collectors know this?

True, except for the errors when the engravers couldn't count!! One example:

1817 Large Cent (15 Stars Obverse)

Thank you Matthew! You gave me an idea. Read my post "my sad Christmas story / fake 1909s" to get background. So I read this and then continued with my present . I decided I'd give him the present and instead of having the 1909s and 1908s coins, I'd add the history of the coins. The first coin is 100 years before his birth year . My 100 years earlier than birth coin is also in there as are 100 years before our kids and grandkids birthdays. Also the centennial of our country is in there, the Civil War , etc. Thanks again... You salvaged my present!

And I think the last example of that was the 1828 12 star Half Cent.
