I bought a used Dansco type album this weekend, and I'm rounding up coins to go in it. All these coins are no# 2 or no# 3 coins so the rest of my coin albums remain the same. Since this book does not have the gold page I should be able to fill it up pretty easy.

I'm guessing it's close to AU.

If it is authentic then I would grade it as AU55 Details. The rim ding and the cleaning take away a lot from the coin IMO.

How can you tell if it is cleaned or not? Check this one for example: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1878-S-Trad...em53f2ddfd94

Has lots of similar hairlines but it is slabbed problem free. They look similar to me.

Similar coin. In a details holder for improper cleaning.

Joe2007,

It's really hard to comment without having the coins in hand. Finding an uncleaned, problem free, nice Trade dollar is a tough thing. Personally, I think the majority have been damaged in some way. The tell-tale signs of a cleaned Trade dollar for me is the white color and hairlines, usually, in parallel. The fields are pretty big on these coins so it's hard to hide the lines if it's been cleaned previously. The one NGC AU-55 coin may have some luster remaining so it must have market acceptable but even it looks like it had an old cleaning at some point.

Y'all are right it is an AU.55 and the reason I did not put it in my Trade dollar book is the rim bruise. As for being authentic it is no doubt I picked it up at a major coin auction in Midland TX last year.
