I think it's made of steel, like Superman. The surfaces just don't read silver to me, and I'm not entirely convinced by the mint mark. Others might disagree.

May I ask what you are interested in collecting right now? Are you only looking for Carson City Morgan dollars?

That mint mark looks bogus to me.

This appears to be a genuine 1878-CC Morgan to me. It should weigh 26.7 grams, a steel or base metal copy will not have the right weight. Even well-made silver counterfeits usually do not have the correct weight. As for the grade, it has VF detail, but sadly the obverse vandalism will hurt the value considerably. It is still a collectible piece and worth more than a low grade common-date "junk" dollar.

There are indeed MANY fake US silver dollars that are made overseas. Most of them are poorly-made can be spotted right away, but there are some that look pretty good. I would recommend checking the weight on any US silver dollars that are purchased in Asia. Also, compare the look and "ring" of them to an example that you know to be genuine. Be VERY careful with Trade dollars. I have seen some very deceptive silver fakes of them that were almost perfect, but the weight was a few grams short. Real Trade dollars weigh 27.2 grams, they are slightly heavier than a standard silver dollar. ~Jim

looks genuine
if its a fake, its most likely a false die or cast. check the weight of the coin.

Thank you all, it does weight 26.7g exactly with an electonic Gold scale.
So I guess I had a good deal with this one according to the greysheet.

I have seen many many many 1878 Morgans of every mint mark (was my collecting interest for awhile) and I have to say this one just doesn't look right to me, I think its a fake myself
