As part of Canada's nationwide, multi-year commemoration of the War of 1812, the Royal Canadian Mint ( RCM) and Canada Post (CP) have each released commemoratives marking the bicentennial of the event. Each is in the midst of a two-year program honoring four of the key figures from the War: Major-General Sir Isaac Brock, Tecumseh, Charles-Michel de Salaberry and Laura Secord. This coordinated RCM-CP program is affording me the opportunity to assemble an attractive, nicely matched numismatic-philatelic (i.e., coin-stamp) combo set that is full of history (which is what I look for in the pieces I add my collection).

What is especially nice about the RCM program is the fact that the coins are available as circulation 25-cent pieces in two different varieties (plain and colourized) as well as in fine silver "collector" coins struck in proof finish. I believe it to be a very well-conceived program that offers something for collectors of all means.

I think the consistent design style being used for all of the coins gives them an interesting look and I find it to be a novel way to create contrast between the background and the foreground portraits of each coin. I also like the off-center placement and partially front-facing style of each portrait, it's another element that keeps the design of these coins from being "standard" portrait coins.

As I've noted before, I believe the RCM did a nice job of combining multiple textures on the silver proof coins. The look of each coin goes beyond that of a "standard" proof coin with the typical mirrored fields and uniformly frosted devices. I think the process the RCM used to achieve this multi-finish effect gives each coin nice depth and allows for subtle details to be highlighted. In short, I find them attractive.

In this post, I'll share the 2012 commemorative coin/stamp issues. Later this year, after the RCM and CP complete their programs, I'll circle back and share the 2013 releases.

Enjoy!

As Brock was born on Guernsey, one of the Channel Islands, Guernsey Post collaborated with Canada Post to jointly issue stamps with the same design. Guernsey Post also issued the stamps in a sheet and on FDCs.

Thanks for the refreshingly quality post and the great pictures!!

I have the Canada Post stamp sheet but wasn't aware of the joint issue with Guernsey. I'll have to look out for those.

I have some of the past Canada/U.S. joint stamp issues and this will be a nice addition to my collection.

All of the coins and stamps shown came out in 2012 - the images shown are from my collection.

I believe all of the 2012 Guernsey and Joint Issue items can still be purchased via http://www.guernseystamps.com.

To add a brief bit of history to the above...

Major-General Sir Isaac Brock (b. 1769; d. 1812), was a military commander and administrator of Upper Canada. He is remembered for his role in defending Upper Canada against American forces during the War of 1812. He was involved with battles at Fort Mackinac, Detroit and Queenston Heights. He was killed during the Battle of Queenston Heights in 1812, but his memory lives on as a hero of Upper Canada.

Tecumseh (b. 1768; d. 1813) was a Chief within the Shawnee First Nations people. He was also a leader of a First Nations confederacy who resisted the encroachment upon their lands by Americans in the late 1700s and early 1800s. Tecumseh sided with Canada/the British during the War of 1812, and served as a military leader for the confederacy warriors involved. He was killed during the Battle of the Thames in 1813.
