Lamination Error Or Die Issue On This 1992-D Nickel?

What the heck is this? 1992D When I run my fingernail across what looks to be a "ridge" between the "U" in "TRUST" and Jefferson's nose, I cannot feel a "ridge". It is just as flat as the rest of the coin. Perhaps it is too small to feel? Dunno... Report this Post to the Staff

I just had my wife feel it with her nails (hers are long) and she's telling me that she feels a difference in height where the "ridge" is located. Uhh....that last paragraph sounded a little weird when I read it back to myself. Gotta keep my mind outta the gutter. Report this Post to the Staff

Maybe some kind of chemical that took a layer off of the top of the coin. Maybe someone wanted to try Nic-A-Date on a coin to see what it would do before using it on a Buffalo nickel or maybe it was just damaged by some kind of acid. It doesn't look like lamination and I don't know of anything that would cause this at the mint. My very uneducated guess is post mint damage. VERY uneducated!
