just wondering why this large cent has already been bid up so high so early in the auction, it doesn't seem to have any rare variety that I can see but I could be wrong. its just that the high bidder I have noticed in the past has bid on alot of large cent varieties in the past which made me look at this coin a little closer,,,am I missing something? thanks for your help

I'm not sure, however if you look at the second digit (8) in the date, it appears to have a repunched digit in it? Also the bidders have high feedbacks so they must be aware of this or possible variety Collectors?

If VG is a higher grade , I owe a stratospheric one with multiple die clashes.

I must be going blind...I don't see a die clash in the beads on gidjits coin. Maybe someone can hold my hand and explain it to me or better yet, maybe we could get some close up picture :)

Valiamo - in your picture the die clash is well shown. It is not where you have indicated, but is below the "beaded circle". We are looking for the obverse beads - die clash which can be seen best at about the 6 o'clock position just below the beaded circle. Look closely at the top of leaf 8 as well. Hope this clarifies things.

This is from BiB

The variety was ID'd by Griffin as a rarity 8 in his Large Cent variety guide as GR-81. We put it in the 2011 Charlton on p 308. Before the clash wore down due to die wear, you could also see some of the Obverse letteing on the reverse (mirror image naturally). It is a neat, well-collected variety and sought after. THAT'S why the bids are so high on this 1881, even though the clash isn't as distinct due to die wear and crud in the incuse clash.

Seems as though they usually go for around $40, so you should end up okay if you just leave the auction:
