My wife is Danish. Kind of cool to see that map of the relation in 800 A.D.
Visited some of the Viking graveyards when I was there. Awesome history.

Oh yeah, nice coin!

ValiantKnoght,
That was a really helpful reference you posted!
I looked through CoinArchives.com, searching on Louis le Pieux, and found two of your variety that had been offered at auctions this year. One had a min bid of 400 euro and did not sell. The other 250 euro and did not sell. I am not a good judge of condition of yours vs these ... anyhow, as there was no sale, so the info is not too helpful in judging the value of yours. You could try using some other search terms and see if you can do better.

How were the conditions of the two coins that were auctioned? Because I got mine for 126 euros.

That price sounds pretty good to me, especially if it's a straight sale, not an auction where you had another 18% on top.

Here are links to same/similar type that I mentioned, so you can judge. First, the one that did not sell at 400 euro. Description translates something like "Dark patina with some whitish deposits." I believe TTB (tres tres beau) translates as VF+.

Here is the one that did not sell at 250 eu. Condition is listed as SUP (superb)which is EF.

Based on those two auction results, it seems that despite being "rare" the market is not willing to pay over 250 euro for examples in pretty nice grade. Still, having followed a few other types, I think 126 euro for a nice example of a carolingian denier with the mint spelled out (I always like this feature) is a good price. I paid slightly more for a common type of denier of Charles the Bald from the St. Denis mint, and a lot more for a nice "temple" denier of Lothair I (the latter at auction with additional fees tacked on).

Those are pretty nice, but I can't help but like the look of mine better, so I'm more convinced now that I got a good deal on mine.

Those sound interesting. I would enjoy seeing those if you don't mind and have the time.

Away from home right now for holidays, but glad to put the photos up when I can.
Age-wise, I think my collection starts around when your ends, as these are my earliest.

Thanks tdziemia. Looking forward to seeing them. So I take it your into Medieval coinage as well? I'm trying to expand my medieval European subcollection but its been slow going, mainly on account of a lot of the coinage I'm interested in is scarce/rare and worth quite a bit of change. I'm trying though.

Yes, my "main collection" is several places in Europe where I have some kind of personal collection. Brabant and Lorraine (because I've lived in those places), Ferrara Italy where I travelled a lot for work, and Poland because of my ancestry. I'm trying for one coin for each Duke/Sovereign, which tends to span from 12th c to 18th for all four places, so there's a good chunk of medieval in there.
Interesting to me is that you can spend a fortune on medieval, but you can also find some very nice examples at auction in the $100 range, as you've found (I think my best deal was a Venetian grosso from around 1300 in close to EF condition for something like 60 euro... not in the "main collection" but it depicts ST. Mark, and one of my sons is named Mark). Not cheap, but for 500 to over 1,000 yr old artifacts, I find it pretty reasonable.

Got it on Monday. Accurate coin color isn't my camera's strong suit so I edited the photos slightly in Photoshop to better show how it looks in hand.
