I am kind of amazed because I allways fear for my two dogs and they seem to know not to swallow dangerous stuff like plastic or stones or metal
The most dangerous they every swalled was a life goldfish that jumped out of the pon ( bones inside are dangerous )

I had a cat when I was a kid that startled a fish into jumping out of our fish tank so she could eat it. Pretty clever if you ask me. I remember a trip I took to Mammoth Cave where our tour guide showed us a pool that used to have some kind of blind critter that only lived underground in it. So many people threw coins into this pool that the critters were poisoned by the metal and died. I wondered if this was a true story or not?

Rachel,

I believe it could be true. Having been born and rasied in a fishing and logging town I have heard of such things. It seems some fish go after the coin like they would a fishing lure. Its shiney and moves through the water. It has now way of digesting the coin. Coins are really dangerous to certain fish.

It is probably heavy metal poisoning that killed the fish
The metal kind of dissolves into the water upon oxidation
An old trick used by aquarium lovers was to chunk in a rusty nail and that dissolved iron made the plants grow better but too much copper and nickel and zinc and iron would kill the fish

The story made sense to me, but I wasn't sure if it was just a story made up to try to keep people from throwing stuff into the water. I was also about 13 when I heard that, and you know the memory is the first thing to go....

I have a friend that has an Oscar. If you're not familiar with Oscars the short description is this; anything else you put in the tank with it is food.

Anyway he has cats and one of them liked to climb up on top of the tank and tease the Oscar by dangling it's paw in the tank then pulling it away.

Well I spent the night there once and at about 2AM I wake up to the cat screaming. You guessed it, the fish got ahold of his paw and wouldn't let go. Oscar's head was out of the water holding on with the cat hanging by just his paw. This was a 15lb cat that Oscar was holding in mid air. He needed a couple heavy finger flicks in his side before he would let go.

A trip to the vet ensued the next morning.

That doesn't surprise me! The pet store we used to get our fish tank supplies had an Oscar as a store mascot. They called him Pork Chop, but he was bigger than any pork chop I've ever seen. That fish just looked mean! Good thing my cat never saw that fish!

That reminds of something that happend many years ago. Off topic of course.

I had a dog that use to chase everything in sight. He would fight only if the other dog was 3 times his size. Many trips to the vet for Skip.

Well one day he was chasing the birds, his favorite sport, and by mistake he took off after a Fighting Cock a friend had in the field behind our house. The next thing I hear is Skip yelping as if he took on the whole Southern Army by himself. I looked out the window and saw this fighting cock riding skip across the field pecking his behind all the way. Skip flew through the broken fence hole knocking the chicken off his back. From that day on anything with feathers was Skips best friend. He wouldn't have a thing to do with them.
