Ancient Chinese coins, maybe... I got them in a bulk load last year, no clue about them. Thanks in advance for any ideas. I might be wrong but it looks like 16 of them are the same and one is different. Also Clean 'em or leave 'em?  Reverse is blank so I didn't worry about pics, this close-up shows the different varieties.   This is the odd one out.  Well I'm not great with oriental characters, so I might be totally off with China. I hope I have the coins oriented the right way thou. |

Bottom row, second from the left might be a Jing De Yuan Bao, it is slightly earlier than the Xiang fu in the Northern Song dynasty. It dates to around 1000AD.

Thanks for looking, and for the link. These Chinese characters look Greek to me...  , so I was hoping a shot-gun approach would get quick ID's but I'm not seeing the exact coins in that link. Plus I swear the one of the top left is the same as the other 15 and the bottom left is the only odd one out. But again it's all Greek to me. I'll try for better pics some day, but might be a while. Too many other things need doing first. Any cleaning suggestions, or a link to the best post here on cleaning ancient coins would be great too, I've tried looking but just get distracted and never find what I'm looking for. |

This might help you (check out coins 6 + 7):  Taken from this informative blog: http://beisongqianbi.blogspot.co.ukAs far as cleaning goes a long soak in distilled (don't use tap) water or olive oil may help. I've never cleaned these, only Roman and Greek so assume its the same kind of thing. I should be able to ID your 'odd one out' coin but for some reason its escaping me  |

I'd just give them a rinse to remove loose crud, then leave them be. If you can't see a character then give it a quick rub with a fiberglass pencil to remove the grit in that area. I'm working through some Chinese cash myself right now. Here's a string of 250 I have to catalog and pluck out doubles from:  |

I've been getting back into Chinese cash, made the switch to Hartill from Schjoth so I have to go through all my books and redo all the tags as well. I have that string and a few bags with maybe 200 more to get through.
That string has some awesome stuff in there:
-About 10 Sendai (Japan) square cash
-Multiple Liao dynasty cash with readable legends
-Bunch of Ming cash as well.
Lots of doubles in there. I figure I can make back the cost of that one batch by selling only a few doubles.

I have always thought coins with holes in the center were cool, and yeah it's really sweet seeing all of them on a string like that. Think I read a news story once saying the vending machine industry didn't like the idea of holes in coins because they could catch up on the machinery. But I always thought if the inner hole is calibrated right, then the coin could be dropped onto a graduated spike and when it stopped if it wasn't the right diameter then it would be rejected, a double calibration test.  So I'm starting slow, I put one of the worst in distilled water yesterday at noon, ~34 hours ago. About an hour ago I tried to brush it and has little success, there was even an encrustation in the hole, I was able to get that out and it's back in to soak. If it's 1000 years old what is a few more day's, week's, month's...   That's a before picture I didn't take a during picture, but I'll have an after picture... in day's... week's... month's... |

 This might help with that "odd one out" I've been messing with the image optimizer and I think I can get close ups from my original on them all, the original is MASSIVE it's like 2848 pixels across and 2134 high, so I think I can get nice images with out taking their pictures again. It's just going to take time with the optimizer |

Been looking at the 'odd one out' again and I think its either Yuan De or Yuan Feng. Struggling to get pictures of either in good condition though to compare, maybe others can find some, my head hurts now  |
