Hey guys,
Don't mean to be intrusive on your conversation (justin, basbal, etc) but I work for Gary Adkins (08-o Barber dime in ms65 you thought should CAC on pg2) I handle all his ebay sales, although I've only been in the trade for a little over a year... I have to say I have decades to go before I could speak intelligently in this forum. However, Gary has been in the business for 50 years now (past president of the PNG, board member of the ANA) and he has done, and still does, business with almost every dealer you've mentioned (not all the ebay guys, we're new there) in this thread. I'd be happy to answer any questions you guys have (mainly by asking Gary or our other senior numismatist Don Whritenour) from the dealers side of the table. I may not be the quickest to respond but I'll be happy to get you guys a dealers point of view on a coin your interested in... PS the 08-o has been with us awhile (June of last year) and hasn't been sent to CAC by us. If I can be of any service please let me know, you guys are what makes my job possible.

I'm not too impressed with it. the liberty is awful and the headband lines don't look complete on the bottom and just barely on the top. the reverse is a bit better but the obverse kills it for me. of course I have no interest in buying it I'm just saying. gonna take a heck of a lot more to tempt me into spending :)

thank you chance, I will keep him in mind when I am ready to pull the trigger on something nice. does he have a significant inventory of Barber dimes besides the ones listed online or does he put it all up online? does he send coins into cac at all? thanks for your time. I like the 1908 o quite a bit but to be honest for now I'm thinking more of getting a higher end key date for more money first and then after that if its still around id probably be interested. it will be a while though. I am thinking a 1895 in ms65 is going to be the coin I buy first, does he have anything like that?

heres something you don't see everyday, an actual auction for a 1910 s slabbed Barber dime. This coin is almost enough to tempt me into putting in a lowball $20 bid. well, maybe. the seller is from Australia and it makes me worried about it being a fake slab or something. does the slab look legit to you? if anyone else here wants it I won't bother bidding against them just let me know, id try to buy it to try to double my money after all is said and done but if someone wants it I won't fight ya. :)

Thank you for the info chance. Having never dealt with you guys before I was just taking a guess based on what other dealers would do. You guys have a great inventory that I've got an eye on a couple things.

I bet that looks better in hand. They use a scanner for their images which arent always the most flattering. I've bought from them a couple times before and things usually look better in hand just from how the pictures are taken.

Hey Justin,
The only 95 we have in stock is a 64+ (http://www.coinbuys.com/products/18...53018-11959) We list everything Gary approves for retail to our site and our ebay listings are extensions of that, out of every 100 or so coins he buys maybe 10% are sold retail by us. Gary has been mostly a wholesale guy with a good eye that only recently has been spurred to expand into the ecommerce world by my pops, hence me working for Gary with no real trade experience, so what we have available is almost always good for the grade since its what he picked out for our stock and not just something to wholesale out (of course you could prove me wrong, still a novice). I'm happy to learn what I can, and you guys seem like a knowledgeable bunch.

Hey Basebal,
I asked Gary about the 08-o and I'm assuming he's unaware of the price difference with a CAC sticker, his first response without research was "hey, if they want to buy it and send it in let them take the risk of John saying OK and getting the premium price"... with over 1m in inventory and the stuff rolls over 10 times a year or so, you could understand how 1-2k coin can slip through the cracks.

do you guys think this coin is original/not damaged/corroded/etc? I am having a hard time telling if its toning or if its been through some damage or cleaning. its a tough date and I'm kind of suspicious it's not in a holder as well. I'm thinking it means the seller knows it wont grade.

GAHHHHHH! I really hope that coin was a lost cause before they decided to ensure it is by plating it! so very sad.

Justin,
You need a break from your dime search!
The 10-S is just plain over graded.
The 96-S, well, has nothing going for it.
And that 97-O plated? SHAME SHAME SHAME!
I am gratified, however, that your eye and critical attitude have grown.
You will avoid much disappointment.
As you seek higher grade and more costly coins both of these skills
are doubly needed.
Better to tell you "DON'T buy it" than for you to be forever after disappointed.
And I think that Chance is very kind to offer help to us all.

Justin, keep saving your money. Look for a rare issue in a scarce grade with superior eye appeal and get your budget into the $1,000 + range. You'll undoubtedly wind up with a coin which will retain its value, if not gain substantial value, over a decade or two and that's what you want. CAC is a must nowadays if you want the coin that sets itself apart from the others. All IMHO. Good luck.

Took your advice matthew and took a day off. it was kind of refreshing honestly. re-read about some of the "top 10" rarities from heritage. so far today nothing interesting found, but the night is very young still. (for me at least, I'm semi-nocturnal). do you guys consider the 1894 s to be a proof or business strike? I'm not 100% positive but I think I saw david lawrences son on the pcgs board say he considers it a business strike, so did the tradedollarnut guy who seems to be a big fish as he claims to have owned one. what are your thoughts?
to me it doesn't really matter collecting wise as I think it most likely was not made for circulation regardless of production method used so I don't need one to complete a business strike set any more than the "specimen" strike coin from Denver I saw on heritage and since if its a proof its a presentation strike I also don't consider it needed for a complete proof set.

Justin,
Happy to hear that you took a 'day off.'
The marathon/sprint analogy is important to remember, for any of the Barber Series
can get bogged down. Especially in the higher grades.
I'd hate to see you burn out.

Along the journey you have met other collectors of the dimes and have
enjoyed their advice as well as mine. We are a small but dedicated bunch
of folks. And you have earned the respect of us all.

And other bit of advice:
When the going gets tough, take out your dimes and enjoy your progress so far.
It keeps me grounded and focused. I never tire of looking at them.

Good luck in your ongoing endeavor.

Does this coin look original to you guys? The rims are oddly a lot worse on the front than the reverse imo but not too bad overall. I would give it a g4 too. the buyer looks to have gotten a fairly decent deal on it. I could of seen it going up another $20-$30. If I had been in the market I think I would of been willing to go $67 plus the $2 shipping.

looks like he gave up selling it as a buy it now. any speculation on whether he gets any kind of premium for his claim of it's a 1893/2? I am uncertain myself. I could see it going either way for him. some buyers on ebay are too trusting and I wouldn't be surprised if a few of them got in a bidding war over it and bid it over 1893 money thinking they are getting a deal on a 1893/2. I could be wrong but I'm very skeptical its a 1893/2, the close up doesn't look right to me for one of such high grade.
I'd love to hear other peoples thoughts on if it is or not still though.
Also, got my $150 for the coin fund from this check in dimes. 1 1961 p rosie. No killer score this time but I'm satisfied with my find for the amount I went through.
