This came from a job lot and before I scanned it I'd thought it was plated. In fact the jagged line across the reverse seems to be corrosion.
Copper. 31 mm, 10.7 gr.

Some of my Byzantine Follis have a large 'M' like that on the back. Unfortunately, I have only tipped my toe in that end of the pool and can't offer any more information. I do think that the large 'M' is unique to Byzantine coins though, so that at least narrows it down.

To the left of the 'M' I think I can make out an Anno. On the right of the 'M' it looks like 'II'.

The mint mark should be below the 'M'. I see what could be an 'o' and some markings I can't identify on each side.

There are some spreadsheets here that may be of help:

If you scroll down to the Byzantine Large M section and download that. I tried to narrow it down but I just don't know enough to get it down to a reasonable number.

That was my fall back (and very much hoped for) option, and the one I would have chosen if it had belonged to anyone else. The reverse scan is not too good but I think I see the figure on the right holding an orb surmounted with a cross.

Thank you very much for the link. Now it's time to get cross eyed.

Definitely a Byzantine large M coin. Maurice issued a lot with the facing bust holding orb type - but then again, a lot of them did.

It is Byzantine, but because of the corrosion I don't think you will able to ID who the emperor is.
